Hello,
I can give you some informations, this is just a comment: this mean
'free'. Hope it helps.

Choose Rome rather than other city in Lazio.
In Rome you will find a lot of attractions: Museums, historical
places, shops. 40% of Lazio is satellite of Rome, the rest is composed
of little towns (under 20k people), rich of historical places, but
poor of other interest.

If you want to stay in Rome for 4 weeks you may expect to pay:

1) Single room in hotel: from 40 to 200 euro (49$~ to 244$~) / night
This is the price for a medium rank hotel (three stars: 1 minimum, 5
maximum). This price include direct telephone,
hair dryer, safe box, air conditioning and the breakfast.

2) Single room in residence: from 30 to 70 euro (36$~ to 86$~) / night
This is a bed & breakfast solution. The price include breakfast, but
you will have to pay the celaning of the room, commonly 50 euro
(61$~): one time fee.

3) Apartment: 1000 to 2800 euro (1200$~ to 3360$~)/month.
This is a tourist fare, but you will have some trouble to find the
right place for you (location, price, etc). Consider to stay some
nights in hotel before you find the apartment.

4) Apartment room: 500/600 euro (600$~/720$~) in a single room,
350/400 euro (420$~/480$~) in double room /month. This is the prices
italian students pays to stay in Rome, so you will not find room at
lower price.
Every language school will provide this solution for you. For example,
you will have a room, shared bathroom and kitchen, and you will have
the opportunity to know people from many countries.

What you may expect from Rome.
Rome is widely called the 'eternal city', but this not mean is locked
in time. You will find 2500 years of history: from the Romans to the
Santa Romana Chiesa long period, renaissance, baroque, rococo. You
will walk through monuments and ruins, and will notice that the romans
lives like suspended in these places. Consider this, in Rome there are
350 small and large churches, six archeological parks, dozen of
monuments, more than 50 private palace rich of interest. Don't forget
Vatican city, a state in a city, and other cultural attractions.
But the best city's resource are the people, you will find they are
like garfield, the cat...
Rome offers a lot of attractions, specially for the night; there are
music clubs, theatres, cinemas, music halls... The best attraction is
food. Italian food is widely diffused in Rome, but the roman
traditional food-style is the main attraction (and difficult to find
in the traditional way). Is plenty of pizzerie, restaurants and
trattorie (mean little restaurant not expensive, but with ensured
quality), and after you can take a walk in the centre of the city or
sit down in a bar in attended square. The squares are the vital
centers of the city: from the little one, beautiful and fogotten, to
the largest one accommodating oceanic crowds. Consider to buy "Roma
C'e'", a weekly publication at 1.20 euro to find all stable
attractions, restaurants, pizzerie and cultural events.
You will never have any problem walking through the city, also on deep
night. Is a calm city. But consider tou MUST visit the city walking or
in little scooter. This is the best solution because the lack of
public transport and traffic.

If you want to make an intensive course, consider to take a room in
apartment with italian people, this will improve your language skills
in lower time (and remember italians are funny and expansive :-) )

For the language course you may expect to pay 600 euro (720$~) for 80
hours (4 weeks). This is an intensive course.
From a school near the center (via nazionale) you can read
"Studying (and teaching) a language in its own country is quite
different from studying (and teaching) it abroad. [...]
English is studied because it is the standard language of
international communication. Italian, on the other hand, whether it is
studied for tourism, business or just for general interest in Italian
culture, is always studied with the aim of integration into the
Italian "way of life". Thus it is essential that the teaching of the
language informs the students of the attitudes, interests and
knowledge of the Italians.

Furthermore Italian is not normally a student?s second language; it is
his or her third, fourth or even fifth language. Consequently our
teaching methods take into account that our students are often very
sophisticated in their language abilities and cultural interests.

Great stress is therefore laid on the spoken language (unless there is
a specific request for an in depth study of written Italian). We
concentrate mainly on getting the students to speak, and less
importance is given to comprehension, because, as they are staying in
Italy, the latter automatically develops outside lesson time in their
everyday life. We continually assess the needs and difficulties of
individual students and we obtain excellent results thanks to our
highly motivated, experienced and talented team of teachers."
