Question ID: 577512
I am getting the following WIndows XP error during boot up: Generic
Host Process for Win32 services has encountered a problem. App
name:svchost. Mod name:netcfgx. When boot up completes, two services
have not been loaded: DHCP Client and WIndows Audio Properties. As a
reult, I cannot complete connection to my wireless network and I have
no sound. I can start these services manually and then everything
works fine. I have applied the Microsft fix for this error message but
it does mnot address my situation. I have done a scan for viruses
using Norton and a scan by Trend Micro Anti Spyware. I think I may
have been deleting some files when this problem started but I am not
sure. Also, I discovered that System Restore was inadvertantly turned
off so I could not go back to a prior state.

garit...

Have you checked to see if those two services are set to
start up automatically? Go to:
Start -> Run, type in services.msc and hit Enter.

R-click on the services you mentioned and select Properties.
Make sure they are set to Startup Type: Automatic.

Let me know...

You may be able to restore the DHCP client by uninstalling and
reinstalling TCP/IP under properties for your network connection.

You might also try re-registering netcfgx from a command prompt:
regsvr32 /s netcfgx.dll

If the coincidentally has an effect on Windows Audio Properties,
great! Otherwise, I'm not familiar with that service in XP.

Let me know where this takes you...

Thanks to all who tried to help but Microsoft had me do an Upgrade
Install which hung and I ended up having to do a hard disk reformat
and reinstall of windows. Needless to say, I lost all my data and
programs. I am cancelling this question.

download and run HijackThis. Then submit it to a webpage that analyses
those logs. You can do a search on google to find websites that will
check your hijckthis log for you for free.

I would do a windows repair. These are both Widnows components and
with an XP CD you will be able to reinstall all windows components.

I am in the process of running HiJackThis. I found a
website...Geeks...that first has me doing a number of scans. When I
get done with this I will let you know.

As far as repairing Windows, it is not these two components. They run
fine if I start them manually. Something is wrong in the boot up
process and one result is that these two services do not get started
as they should.

Hi garit-ga,

Try to start your windows XP in Safe Mode, see if same error persist,
in this way, you could narrow down the possible root cause, whether
its by startup 3rd party software, or caused by Device Drivers.

If the error didn't happen in Safe Mode, you should start head your
way to newly installed/updated device drivers(hardware).

If the error STILL happen in Safe Mode, you should check your newly
installed softwares, i'll assume some software's mechanism is
conflicting with your current Windows services. (perhaps try to
troubleshoot by reducing starup programs in run: msconfig > Startup
tab)

By all the suggestion above, i assume your PC is clean from any
spyware/worm threats. If you still doubt with your pc cleanliness,
visit more Virus Scanner site and also install Microsoft Antispyware
Beta 1 if you haven't do so.

Thanks for the time, hope this help.
