I need information about U.S. businesses that specialize in supplying
books to school libraries and/or public libraries. Such businesses
also provide value-added services along with the books -- such as
creating cataloging materials. To the best of my knowledge, these
businesses are categorized as wholesalers or jobbers.
For each year of the past five years (more if possible), I need to
know the names of all companies in this business, and the source for
this information. To the extent that the figures are available, I
also need to see each company's yearly gross sales and profit or loss.
Two big players in this field are "Baker and Taylor" and Follett.
(Their web sites also provide links to other library resources, which
might be helpful for this search.) Note that some major book
publishers might offer services to libraries along with their books,
but I really don't know. There is one small business that I'm aware of
in this field: the Regent Book Company, located in New Jersey -- if
your search turns up Regent, you know you're on the right track. Two
magazines that might provide some help are: Library Journal and
Publishers Weekly.
A reference to an affordable (free to $50) report surveying this field
and discussing trends would be appreciated, though this is not
required. |
