Question ID: 577730
I need an impact printer that will:

Print on 6 part NCR, non-continuous, 8.5" x 14" forms.
Forms are numbered so they need to print from the top.
Holds 25-30 forms at a time.

We are replacing an Epson Lq-670 with a cut sheet feeder that's on it's last legs.
On advise from Epson I bought a LQ-590 with cut sheet feeder as a
replacement but the forms don't feed through correctly.

I'd like to keep the price under $1000.00.

Thanks.

Hi funchy-ga, Do you have other requirements or things you'd like to
see in a printer (e.g., 24 pin vs. 9 pin, network capability, certain
duty cycle requirements, etc.)? There are lots of printers that might
fit your requirements, and it may be helpful to narrow down the
list...

Hi funchy,

After studying the specs on your old printer (which you like) versus
the new printer (which you don't), I've come up with three Epsons for
you that should be able to do the job (#1 being the most likely).
First, here are the specs on the LQ-670 and LQ-590 (it's only rated
for 5 NCR):

Old printer:
Epson LQ 670 Matrix Printer (24 pin)
Plain paper / A3 / 5 parts
http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Epson_LQ_670

New printer:
Epson LQ-590 Matrix Printer (24 pin / Parallel & USB)
Form
  original plus four carbonless copies
Width
  Single sheets to 14"
  Cut-sheet feeder to 14"
Length
  Single sheets to 14"
  Cut-sheet feeder to 14"
http://www.superwarehouse.com/Epson_LQ-590/C11C558001/ps/392469

I looked for printers which meet the following requirements:

Minimum 6 parts carbonless parts
Minimum Legal size 8.5" x 14"
Plain paper single sheet and or cut sheet
Available new (not refurbished)
Under $1000

I chose to post SuperWarehouse's links because they include a good
list of detailed specifications (click on the links for more details).
Number one is the only one of the three that specifies NCR. Following
the specs, I've added the DealTime links for comparison shopping for
each printer.

1) EPSON FX-2190 Impact Dot Matrix Printer (9 pin / Parallel & USB)
Form
  Original + 5 Carbonless Copies
Width
  Single sheets to 16.5"
  Cut-sheet feeder to 16.5"
Length

  Cut-sheet feeder to 14.0"

Price range: $399.00 - $632.00

2) Epson FX-890N Network Impact Printer (9 pin / Parallel & USB)

I hope you find at least one of the printers hits the spot. If not, or
if you have any questions, please post a clarification request and
wait for me to respond before closing/rating my answer.

Thank you,
hummer

Search Strategy:

I searched at DealTime under "matrix" and checked the specs of many
printers under $1000 before coming up with the three I listed above.

This is the first time I have used google answers so maybe I wasn't
clear in my request.

We need an impact printer that we can load a handful of numbered
multipart forms into and have them feed through from the top of the
pile.

I looked at the epson printers in your answer but they all specify
that they print multipart forms using the tractor mechinism, and that
the cut sheet feeder is for single sheets only. Our forms are not on a
tractor feed.

On the 590 I purchased the multipart forms don't feed correctly using
the cut sheet feeder. The user's guide tells you to use the front
feed on this printer for multipart forms (because that is the
straitest paper path), but you have to load them one form at a time.

I was going to buy the LQ680Pro but after calling Epson, they informed
me that they discontinued the cut sheet feeder for this printer (and
couldn't find one anywhere), and were going to discontinue the printer
itself in the near future.

It was the closest match to the 670 that worked for us.

I don't know if I am explaining my problem correctly.

Hi funchy,

Aw, that's too bad, but hopefully we'll find you your printer
eventually. Thank you for your clarification, it's quite helpful. I
will have another look as soon as possible and see what I can come up
with but I'm quite busy on other projects at the moment so it may take
a few days. Would you be interested in a used or refurbished Lq-670 or
a LQ680Pro with cut sheet feeder? At any rate, I'll try my best to
help you and let you know one way or the other. Don't worry, you are
using GA perfectly - it's always better to use the clarification
option rather than give up and close the question.

I'll be in touch,
hummer

Hi again,

The sheet feeder for the LQ-680, Manufacturer # C806871, is available
from quite a few dealers. Is that the part number Epson gave you?

Please let me know if the LQ-680-Pro with feeder is satisfactory or if
you'd prefer another printer altogether.

Will wait to hear back from you,
hummer

I'm not sure about the 680 with the feeder. I'm hesitant to purshase
a printer the soon to be dicontinued, know what I mean?

Ok, will have another look and get back to you this weekend. I'll
assume the specs on the 680 with feeder are all satisfactory for you,
if not, let me know what you'd change. Till later, hummer

Hi funchy,

1) Here is a sheet feeder that is compatible with the 590 you already
tried and the 890N (# 2 on my list) which will handle multiple sheets.
Is this the feeder you tried with the 590 which didn't feed correctly
or might it be a solution?

Epson High Capacity Cut Sheet Feeder
Part #: C806381
High-capacity cut sheet feeder feeds up to 150 sheets of paper or 25
plain bond envelopes into the printer without reloading.

# Epson FX-890N (C11C524001NT)
# Epson LQ-570e (C293001)

# Epson LQ-870 (C060021)
http://www.superwarehouse.com/Epson_High_Capacity_Cut_Sheet_Feeder/C806381/p/27052

note: I wouldn't have suggested the 590 because it's only rated for up
to 5 parts, as is your 670.

2) Regarding the LQ-680 Pro, I happened to come across a statement
that it's a good replacement for your 670. Personally, I think it's a
good choice.

3) Following are some lists of high capacity cut sheet feeders and the
printers they are compatible with. The trouble is, I think you'll find
the 680 more readily available then any of them (Walmart even has the
680).

I tried, funchy, but taking everything into account (specs, price,
availability, discontinued or not and feeder), I think the 680pro will
be hard to top.
