I recommend contacting the Church of the Latter Day Saints for that answer. In my own visit to Nauvoo nearly 30 years ago, it seemed that people hated Mormons simply because they had a different religion, and also polygamy was considered by Christians to be totally immoral. Mr. Smith was no threat as a presidential candidate, because there simply were not enough people who would ever vote for a Mormon leader, in those days. I don't remember anything about him freeing slaves. It never came up during my visit. Though not my business, and please do not respond, I must wonder who on earth suggested these causes for his death. It sounds like someone with a major axe to grind. |

Dear The Truth, Like Irlandes, I've no evidence at all that these two were remotely connected to Smith's death by mob. You can read about Smith's death here: Death of Joseph Smith, Jr. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Joseph_Smith,_Jr.> The main issue of controversy was polygamy; and in fact it was the hate towards "Otherness" of the Mormons that drove the mob. In any case, regarding this second reason, Smith's position on the issue of slavery was ambivalant: Blacks and Mormonism <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacks_and_the_Church_of_Jesus_Christ_of_Latter-day_Saints> |
