Hello again, mdh76-ga,
As with the other question of yours that I answered, I turned to the
Statistical Abstracts as a very handy source of information:
http://www.census.gov/prod/2004pubs/04statab/business.pdf
Section 15
Business Enterprise
In particular, this table breaks out employment statistics by the size of the firm:
No. 730. Establishments, Employees, and Payroll by Employment-Size Class:
1990 to 2001
and shows us the following fo the most recent year, 2001:
==========
100-499 employees:
157,000 establishments
29,692,000 employees
(NOTE: average of 189 employees per company)
==========
==========
500 or more employees:
19,000 establishments
24,133,000 employees
(average of 1,270 employees per company).
NOTE -- figures are the sum of the 500-999 category, and the 1,000
employees and above category)
==========
Once again, I trust this information fully answers your question.
However, please don't rate this answer until you have everything you
need. If you would like any additional information, just post a
Request for Clarification to let me know how I can assist you further,
and I'm at your service.
All the best,

Here is the main page for the Statistical Abstracts:
http://www.census.gov/statab/www/
which is listed more formally, as:
U.S. Census Bureau, Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2004-2005
As for establishments, your question hits the nail on the head. An
establishment is esentially a business location, and a single company
can easily have many establishments.
For instance, a single chain restaurant company would be operating
many establishments around the US, and the employee counts would be
made with reference to each individual restaurant, rather than for the
company as a whole.
Let me know if there's anything else you need on this.

Yes indeed...Here you go:
http://www.census.gov/prod/2004pubs/04statab/business.pdf
No. 732. Employer Firms, Employment, and Annual Payroll by Enterprise Size
and Industry: 2001
[...A firm is an aggregation of all establishments owned by a parent
company (within a geographic location and/or industry) with some
annual payroll. A firm may be a single location or it can include
multiple locations...]
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Number of Employees
- - - - - - - - - - -- - 100-499.............Over 500
Firms .................. 85,000...............17,000
Employment.............. 16,410,000..........57,678,000
I can't help pointing out that the number of employees in firms of 500
or more employees is almost exactly equal to the total number of
employees in firms of 499 or fewer employees (57.7 million vs 57.4
million).
Again, let me know if there's anything else I can help you with.
