Are you asking specifically about cell phone rentals, or do you mean
cell phone subscribers (i.e. regardless of whether they rent or own
the phone, the actual sales volume for cellular service
subscriptions)? I have found a lot of information on cellular phone
statistics, but nothing at all about rental numbers - specifically,
just renting a phone from a company.
 I will be happy to supply the information I have found, if you
clarify this question for me.

I am specifically asking about "cell phone rentals in the USA" most of
these renters are business people visiting the USA but who want / need
to be in touch with there operations overseas while here.  There are
special cell phones [GSM cell phones], they are expensive and allow
clear reception and transmittion of voice to and from almost anywhere
on the planet.  This is the market I am interested in.  I hope this
has clarified the question.

Telephia (www.telephia.com) researches wireless usage.  Maybe you
could coax someone there to giving you the information.
