When I log on to my Remote Desktop via VPN (using Windows XP Pro,
wireless DSL connection) the logon screen appears normally. However,
after I enter my username and password, the desktop appears to load
but appears only as a blank white screen. Any thoughts on how I can
correct this?

I had this exact same problem with my computers.

Does it happen if the pc you are connecting to is currently being used?
This is what happened in my scenario and i found it was to do with
screen resolutions being different on host and client.
