Hi, I'm writing a technical philosophy paper in MS Word (XP Home Office 2002 edition), and I need to be able to construct arguments using quantifier and modal logic. I know about the "Insert Symbol..." option from the insert menu, but most of the symbols that I need aren't in the symbol menu (not even under the "mathematical operators subcategory") on my machine. Here's what I need (at minimum): --Existential and universal quantifier symbol (backwards E and upside-down A) --Conditional symbol (Sideways U). --Modal operators (box and diamond). I believe that other symbols I might need are already on the keyboard or in the existing symbols menu. Good answers: --How to do this using existing options in Word --The location of a small, simple, and free dowload that would add the relevant symbols Bad answers: --A grotesquely huge software package (shouldn't be necesary for something so simple) --A dowload that costs money |

You can simply use Character Map, a free included program of Windows. It is located at Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map When it loads you will see all the characters for each font, choose the 'Symbol' font from the drop down menu. After you select the character, press the 'select' button and copy it for easy pasting into Word. I believe this is your answer! -wwwsurfer |

Well that answers it. Thanks to both of you. I suspected those symbols were somewhere in Windows, I just didn't know where to look. |
