Dear crabcakes, Yes, women were prohibited from voting in Germany before 30 November 1918. On that day, only 20 days after the end of the monarchy, the Decree on the Elections for the constituent German National Assembly gave women full suffrage. The Reich Electoral Law adopted this regulation. An interesting side note: Although women were not allowed to vote prior to 1918, they could be members in political parties since 1908. However, before 1908 several German states had laws explicitly prohibiting women from membership in political parties. Prussian law, for example, stated that students, apprentices, insanes and women could not be members of political organizations... All the best, Scriptor |
