napier...

A search based on your description turned up nothing informative.
Your best bet might be a professional exterminator. Shop around
by phone until you hear the sound of recognition and a rep gives
you a positive ID when they see the critters.

Do you by any chance have a lot of plants in your dwelling - some
of them dead or dying? What you're describing almost sounds like
some form of plant parasite which is managing to survive off the
plant and is looking for alternative food sources.

Hi napier,

So sorry to hear of your troubles...

I used to own a carpet and upholstery cleaning company. An
exterminator probably won't help, you need to treat all the fabric and
carpet in your home. I believe the answer to your problem is Microban
X-580 (musy have the X-580, with the red & black label, there are 2
kinds of Microban).

Microban X-580
http://cleanstop.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=118&osCsid=c3024c3da7152eb8ff8c134782f3797a
..."MicrobanŽ X-580 Institutional Spray Plus kills gram negative
bacteria, the bacteria encountered in sewage backups and toilet
overflow situations. MicrobanŽ X580 Institutional Spray Plus is E.P.A.
approved for both spray and ULV fog application. MicrobanŽ X-580
Institutional Spray Plus kills roaches, fleas, ants, beetles, bedbugs,
and their larvae. MicrobanŽ X-580 Institutional Spray Plus protects
stored fabrics against textile destroying insects for 6 months! ..."

It has a slight hospital odor, but it's not offensive. You have 2
choices. Hire a professional to clean all your carpet and upholstery,
and apply Microban X-580 when done, or just buy it yourself, (you'll
need a couple gallons) and buy a PUMP SPRAYER, apply it yourself and
hope for the best.

The first option could run several hundred dollars, the second option
can be done for under $100. Microban is amazing stuff. If I were you
I'd take option #2. If you see it works AT ALL, it means that option
#1 would work in totality.

It's very possible that if you clean everything before you apply it,
and use some in the rinse cycle of your laundry (bag all clean
clothes/bedding till you have completed the sweep), vacuum the carpet
well, remove cushions and vacuum upholstery before spraying, you might
get them all, or close enough.

Spray inside cabinets, and do the floors (including hardwoods) FIRST,
mattresses next, they will run to the carpets & upholstery. Saturate
the carpet and upholstery. Start at the back of the house and move
towards the door.

If this works for you, let me know in a clarification and I'll post in
the Answer box.

~~Cynthia

Does it look like this:
Kind of sounds like a bird mite:
http://medent.usyd.edu.au/fact/birdmite.html

We had these, apparantly from pigeons that nested in our roof. They
are so tiny they crawl through tiny cracks in walls. We'd could just
barely see them.

The solution was to find the nest, and eradicate it. Note it could
also be rat mites, so if you can't find a bird nest, there may be a
mouse or rat nest inside.

We got rid of out problem by getting an exterminator (local guy.. most
big companies don't do bird mites). He removed the nest, and sprayed
the area a lot. He had to come back like 3 times, and got bit himself
in the process!

At the same time, you should go to the doctor, and get a permethrin
type ointment. (Out vet identified our tape lift as a bird mite.. the
doctor didn't seem to care, and treated it like it was scabies...
either way, the permetrin kills whatever is crawling on you!)

Also, I washed EVERY piece of clothing and sheets in the house with
borax. And vacuumed really well. This maybe wasn't necessary with
all the chemicals, (and since mites can't live without a meal from a
bird or rodent.. not human), but this was about a week before our
wedding, so we took no chances!
It also needs to be sprayed... .A LOT. We had the exterminator come
out 3 times and spray the nest area (in the process, he ended up with
bites!). We then washed EVERYTHING in the house, every piece of
clothing, with borax. And went to the doctor (who gave us a cream
that is used to treat scabies... ). You need a permethrin type
ointment, not antibiotics.
