Howdy pearlkrabs-ga,
The Google search facility has a neat feature where one can get a
definition of words or phrases by doing a "define" search. In your
case, one can search on the following: define:purchase order to get
the definition of a purchase order or "P.O."
"Definitions of purchase order on the Web ..."
Included in the above search is the following definition from The
Accounts Payable Network web site.
http://www.theaccountspayablenetwork.com/html/modules.php?name=Articles&file=article&sid=7
"Information sent to a vendor to request product or service; typically
includes item, quantity, price, discounts, vendor information, and
ship-to information"
Typically, a purchase order is used by a company or organization, so
that there is an authorization, verification and tracking process for
the purchase of products/supplies and/or services. Usually a unique
number (P.O. number) is given to each purchase order for tracking and
accounting purposes.
The settlement method can be done in several ways, including using a
credit card at the time that the P.O. is issued, cash or check on
delivery (C.O.D.) when the product/service is delivered/rendered, or
other terms (invoiced net in 30 days, etc.) set by the vendor.
Here are some links to images of typical purchase orders. Keep in mind
that every company/organization that uses purchase orders usually has
a purchase order form that is designed specifically for their purposes,
and might have different P.O. forms for different functions, such as
office supplies (low value items), office equipment (high value items)
and services, etc.
