i noticed earlier today that my site was listed
(http://real-estate-nerja.com) and was also getting a 4/10 rating. 30
minutes the rating was 0 and the site (using th same key word - real
estate for sale in nerja)was no longer listed.
Is this normal and why does this happen?

Hi,

Your Page Rank will change periodically, this is a normal function of
the Google PR system. Page Rank is based on numerous criteria, and
these are changing all the time. Here are some pages you can look at
to get a better idea of what these criteria are currently

Google explains Page Ranking

The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hyper-textual Web Search Engine

I checked your site just before answering this question and my meter
shows a page rank of 2 right now. Since you just checked it and it was
4, and then nothing, it is possible that the servers are updating your
status, and you have caught it during the update period. That you keep
an eye on this is a good thing.

Searching Google for pages that link to you, since this is a high
criteria area, I found none listed. I jumped over to AltaVista and ran
the check there and found this site.
http://www.propertydelsol.com/
as having a link, but could not find the link itself. A rating of 4
suggests more sites were linking to yours at one time, and for
whatever reason have stopped. This could be that they updated their
sites and the links didn't make the journey or that those sites no
longer exist.

Before you get the thought of "Well I'll get a hundred domain names
and make pages that all link to mine" I should warn you that this will
do more harm than good.

External links to you site are a good thing, but not if they come from
sites whose PR is less than yours. The 100 domains are not going to
have a high PR, in fact, with this strategy, they normally don't have
a PR at all. And if they are all linking to each other, the web-bots
figure this out and call it spamming, and black list the whole lot of
you. This is one of the reasons weblink-rings aren't as effective as
they use to be in the past.

Internet is based on community and what some people call "per review".
Always has been and this is some of the basis of what Google considers
good external links. There are well thought out reasons for this. If
someone that owns a car dealership is linking to my page, Google
doesn't feel that the link is as important as say another Internet
Programmer linking to my page. A link from a page in the same type of
category is a per review for better or worst. The link may becoming
from my competitor from inside an article that explains how much I
don't know about internet programming, and why you should stick with
him. That's okay, says Google, its still a per, so the PR is higher
for my site. As they say about gossips, "Hey, at least they are
thinking about you."

I used the same key word you gave in your question and found you at
the top of the list.

This leads me further to believe that the momentary "blackout" of your
site, was just that, momentary. I watch my sites rather closely as
well, and a few years ago, blackouts like this use to send me into a
frenzy of "what the heck did I do wrong now?" But if they don't last
longer than a couple of days, I don't worry about them anymore. With
as much as there is on the Internet, trying to keep an updated dynamic
listing system going presents a few problems that are beyond the scope
of this answer. But all search engines of any size have multiple
servers in several areas all over the world, keeping these all updated
with the same information presents a few problems, and blackouts
happen periodically. My sites tend to go "dark" once or twice a year,
and the longest has been for only 12 hours. I know its like watching a
bare light bulb in a empty warehouse wink out, but really, its all
part of the playing ground.

I've looked at your site's code and didn't find any huge warning signs
of things that will get you banned from the search engines. You have a
robots meta tag, with is good. You might consider using a robots.txt
file on your site as well, it helps to stabilize your listings and
makes it easier on the robots that index you. Your linking system is
good throughout the site and you offer external links as well.. all of
this is very good. You are using Microsoft themes, but don't have
extensions running, that I could see anyway, this is also very good,
since the Microsoft Front Page extensions can throw robots off
occasionally.

Since it doesn't look like you were banned for any reason this is
probably information that is not required, but beware of programs like
Web Position Gold. Using those can get you removed from the indexes
rather fast, as Google and several others don't like having to deal
with the problems they cause.

All in all I would wait until the morrow and check your status again.
If it looks like you have been dropped or the blackout goes for more
than a day or two you can write an email to Google and ask them why
this has happened, but I wouldn't pester them unless it has gone on
for a few days. They are very good at working with you, and solving
problems quickly.

Thanks,

Excellent answer webadept. The only things I can think of to add is my
experiences recently.

It seems that the Page ranks updated on a few sites of mine recently.
That is within the last week. One of mine increased.

Another thing I have noticed is that sometimes the Pagerank interface
just seems to not work. Not often mind you, but I have noticed a few
times that it stays grayed out when the site I know has some Page
rank. I think the software that sends the url to Google and then
responds to your Google toolbar gets interrupted somehow. It has to do
this for each site and if any server is busy or inop at the time, it
is slow or just does not give you a ranking. When this happens I don’t
think your real PR has changed, even momentarily, I think it is just
that we don't see it. I think the Google search engine algorithm still
has it and uses it to rank pages it is just that it is not seen to you
on your Toolbar. Pretty much speculation on my part but the rankings
seem to slowly change and PR slowly change and I have never seen one
really go from 4 to 0 if the site is still online.
