Which firms are the 5 biggest employers in San Francisco, in employee
count? Specifically, I'm looking for SF firms with the greatest number
of employees living on the peninsula that commute to and from SF every
day by car.

What you are asking for may be unanswerable, at least in terms of how
it is currently worded. Identifying the top five largest employers in
San Francisco is not that difficult but identifying the top five
largest employers that have the greatest number of employees living on
the peninsula is virtually impossible to determine unless you are
willing to purchase a market research report that would typically
costs hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars.

I did manage to find a publication that lists all the biggest
employers (with some details about each of them) in San Francisco (and
other selected areas) that is current as of January 2005. The book
retails for $44. Is this something that would interest you as an
answer?

I also found a current reputable list of the 100 largest BAY AREA
employers ranked by number of employees, but again, it does not
indicate how many of these employees live on the peninsula. Would this
interest you as an answer?

In your "list of the 100 largest BAY AREA employers", is it easy to
tell which ones have the most people actually working in San
Francisco? If so, that source should be good enough. I am fine with
assumming that the largest SF employers will also likely have the most
commuters coming from the peninsula.

Here is a chart depicting the largest 100 companies ranked by total
number of employees according to The San Francisco Chronicle. The
companies are ranked according to the overall number of employees
nationwide, but in the far right column you will find the current
number of local employees for each company as well:

I should mention however that I noted that the City and County of San
Francisco, which employs over 28,000 people, is inexplicably missing
from The Chronicle?s list. Perhaps for the purposes of this survey
they didn?t consider ?The City? to be a ?company? in the traditional
sense, but for the sake of your question I?m certain it will be an
important fact. I just thought I?d mention it because they are, after
all, technically one of the city?s largest employers.

profile and a SIZE CLASSIFICATION of employees (the number of
employees is given in a range):
