Question ID: 57961
My internet searches have uncovered the following report:

"A Report on Cancer" by Dr. Hardin B. Jones, a former professor at
Cal. Berkley. This report (or paper) was given at the American Cancer
Society 11th Annual Science Writers Conference in New Orleans on March
1, 1966.

I would like to get a copy of this report, or if that is not practical
through the internet, the addresses of places it might be archived.

Hi there!

Searching several databases, I've come across only two references to
this report, both of which place this as a presentation given before
the ACS Science Writer's Conference in 1969. Is it possible that you
mis-remembered the date?

The report does not seem to be available on the Internet, nor was I
able to locate it through the libraries of the Medical College of
Ohio, The University of Toledo, or the University of Michigan.

I spoke with Michelle at the American Cancer Society, and she has
initiated a search of their archives - if anyone will have this
presentation, it will be the ACS. She expects that the search could
take a week or more. I will post the information as soon as I have
it, I just wanted to let you know that your query is being
investigated, and it might take some time.

Missy: Your are correct! I misread my notes, the correct date is
1969. Hope the ACS can find it. Is there such an organization as the
"Science Writers" - maybe they have an archive. Thanks, Ed Gilcher

Hi Ed,

Just to follow up:

Jenny from the ACS called a few minutes ago. They do indeed have the
report and have promised to e-mail it to me within the next few days.
Jenny tells me that if it hasn't been sent within the week to call
them back and find out where it's gone off to.

I'll upload it to my server as soon as it arrives, and post a download
link for you here when I've done so.

Hello Ed!

The ACS sent the report today! Here is an excerpt from their e-mail:

"This message is in response to your phone call to our National Cancer
Information Center on August 23, seeking a copy of the "Report on
Cancer"
given by Hardin B. Jones at the American Cancer Society's 11th Annual
Science Writer's Conference."

It's a pretty good sized file (.34 MB!), and is in .pdf format. To
read it, you'll need Adobe's Acrobat Reader installed. If you don't
have Acrobat Reader, you can get it here:

Acrobat Reader
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

I've uploaded the file to one of my hosting servers for you:

http://blake.prohosting.com/~woozle/extras/cancerfile.pdf

If there are any difficulties downloading the file, please let me
know, and I'll put it on a faster server for you.

Thank you for your patience while I ferreted this out. If I can be of
further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask.

Missy: I cannot download the file from the "Blake -----" URL you sent
me. My Acrobat Reader 5.0 comes up, but then I get an error message
as follows:

       ACROBAT READER
File does not begin with '%PDF-'.

When I click on "OK" (the only option given me) the screen goes blank
and there I sit...

Can you resolve this for me?

Hi Ed!

I'm so sorry! I have no idea why blake.prohosting mangled that file!
Technology is so wonderful when it works properly, but like a
recalcitrant child when it doesn't.

I've moved the file to my personal server:

http://www.darkfriends.net/cancerfile.pdf

...and have tested it in both MSIE 5.0 and Mozilla 1.0. It loads much
faster in MSIE, but does work in both. Alternatively, you can right
click the link and choose "Save Target" or "Save Link Target"
(depending on your browser) to save the file directly to your hard
drive. Double clicking the file after download will activate the
Acrobat Reader.

Please do let me know if there are any further complications, and I
will iron them out for you ASAP!

Missy:

The copy from your personal server came through just fine. We can
consider this search concluded. Thank you so very much.

Missy showed great initiative in tracking down a rather obscure and
old report. Sure will use this service again. Ed Gilcher
