Question ID: 579614
Where can I find 2 good websites that will identify interactions
between drugs, whereby I can input the drugs that I take and it will
identify any (negative) interaction resulting from the combination of
the drugs. Primarily concerned with prescription drugs, but would
also be good to have info on prescription drugs vs. over-the-counter
drugs.

I'm glad my suggestion of the Drug Interactions Guide at Drugs.com was
useful. It's a bit cumbersome at first, but once you get the hang of
it, it is an excellent tool. I've reposted the link below:

Drug Interactions Guide
http://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.html

Here are two similar tools:

Drug Guide -> Drug Interactions
http://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Atoz/drugdb/drugSearch.jsp

Virginia Hospital Center: Drug Interaction Tool
http://www.virginiahospitalcenter.com/content/home_drug_tool.asp

When using online tools of this sort, I suggest that you use a drug's
generic name rather than a brand name. For instance, it's usually
better to enter "diazepam" rather than "Valium." If you don't know the
generic name, this site will help:

RxList: Search for a Drug Name
http://www.rxlist.com/

My Google search strategy:

Google Web Search: "drug interactions guide OR database"

Google Web Search: "drug interaction tool"

There's a Drug Interactions Guide here (scroll to the lower section of
the page, then read and accept the terms of service):

Thanks for the input Pinkfreud. That is the only type of site that I
have been able to find...one that lists the drugs and their individual
interactions. I would like to find a site where you list 2 drugs (or
more)and it tells you if there is a potential problem if these are
taken together. Maybe no such site exists.

slcgateway,

Note that the Drug Interactions Guide to which I linked allows you to
build a list of several drugs, and if there is a known interreaction
between any two or more of these drugs, it will tell you that. Here,
for example, is what I obtained after I compiled a list containing
Valium and Tagamet:

"cimetidine and diazepam (minor Drug-Drug)
 Description:
H2 antagonists such as cimetidine may increase plasma concentrations
of some benzodiazepines and enhance sedation. The mechanism may be
related to inhibition of liver cytochrome P450 enzymes responsible for
metabolism of certain benzodiazepines. This interaction appears to be
minimal with lorazepam, oxazepam, and temazepam. Ranitidine may
increase or decrease benzodiazepine plasma levels, however, the
effects are not expected to be clinically significant. This
interaction has not been noted with other H2 antagonists. Clinical
monitoring of patient response and tolerance is recommended and
benzodiazepine dosage reductions may be indicated."

Thanks Pinkfreud and joltoc7. Exactly what I was looking for. I
don't know how you claim your reward, but I will pay each of you the
$7.77 offered if you process the pay request.
THANKS MUCH.
