I am currently studying simplified Mandarin Chinese. In order to aid
my studies, I would like a flashcard program that would have several
key features. I use a macintosh, so it would have to work on OSX, and,
of course, it would have to support simplified chinese characters.
I have entered all the characters I've learned into a spreadsheet with
5 columns per word. The columns are: pinyin, character, english
meaning, unit (in our textbook), and unit & lesson (for a more
specific way of ordering them). It would be nice if I could transfer
(i.e. copy & paste) the data to the program's database. I would prefer
if the program can be downloaded so that I can run it while offline.
Freeware/shareware is preferred, but I would be willing to pay a bit
for it.
I've been to http://www.mandarintools.com/ and found their java
program to be too restrictive. Chinese character
tutor, found at http://www.bridgetochina.com/home.asp?sroom=1 seems
really good but is only compatible with windows.
The general requirements I would have for the flashcard program are as follows:
-I would like there to be a database that I can create, especially if
I can copy and paste from my spreadsheet.
-This database should be able to have at least three data points per
entry, e.g. each entry would be a word, or a card, and the data points
I'd be using are the pinyin, the character, and the english. The
character side of the card should be able to contain more than one
character per entry.
-during self-quizzes, I need the ability to select any of the three
data points as the front side and any of the other ones (or both) as
the reverse side.
-randomization is, of course, essential.
-the ability to choose a subset of the data points for self quizzes
(for instance, the words from just one chapter) is essential
-as a bonus, the ability to keep track of the ones I got right and the
ones I didn't get right during a given self-quiz, and then administer
the ones I got wrong again (maybe even administer them more frequently
later), would be great. Of course, I'd tell it whether or not I got it
right each time.
-the ability for me to copy and paste from excel would be great (I
already have a spreadsheet with 567 entries and I don't want to have
to retype them all)
-Oh, and if there were an easy way for it to display pinyin with tone
marks (much less cluttered than numbers), that'd be great, too.
I would be overjoyed if you could find a program for me. Chinese is
not the easiest language to learn and any opportunity to make my
studies easier will be appreciated. I'm in Beijing right now, so if I
have to pay, it'd be great if I could download it or at least have it
shipped here.
Thanks in advance. |
