What is the name of a French writer (works as an editor; woman) who
appeared on a recent(?...I saw recently, but I don't know when the
show aired) Charlie Rose show. She wrote a largely biographical (but
some fiction) novel.

Dear mathom-ga,

From your description could it be Joan Juliet Buck. However, she
appeared on the show on 7/4/2000. Let me know whether you think it
could be her or should I be looking for a guest at a later date.

If I am repeating myself, I am sorry. I cannot remember (open-heart
surgery dregs) if I wrote you a message on this screen or if I sent a
reply to my e-mail; probably the latter. The author was on a recent
show and was not Joan Juliet Buck. I did a google search and the
photo for Ms. Buck was not the correct author. I saw the show this
week on WUFT, Gainesville, FL, but I don't know when the show was
taped. I searched the Charlie Rose website and Amazon.com to no
avail.

Could the writer have been Annie Cohen-Solal? She has been on the
Charlie Rose Show.

How about Justine Levy? She's French, and she recently published a
novel which contains a lot of autobiographical details, "Nothing
Serious":

Justine Levy is on an episode of the Charlie Rose Show which also
features Andrew Marr and Erica Wagner. The show aired yesterday in
some markets, and is airing today in others.

and from New York, French author Justine Levy on her book Nothing

Pinkfreud: Great!!! You have done it again. It is Justine Levy. Her
father is the French philosopher, Bernard Henri-Levy. Someone on the
Charlie Rose message board provided the answer and a lively
conversation, as well. You are the best. I know I should not ask, but
am curious as to what your profession is aside from being a great
researcher.

Mathom,

I'm delighted to have been able to help you identify the author as
Justine Levy. This was a tough one, since the Charlie Rose site did
not, at the time I visited it, have Mlle. Levy's name in its list of
guests. Apparently the show was so recent that the website hadn't yet
caught up.

After an Internet search turned up very little, I found the answer by
emailing a friend who is a fan of Charlie Rose. My friend made a
couple of suggestions, and voilą, Justine Levy looked like the best
choice.

Thanks for the kind words! Regarding your question about my
profession, Google Answers is it. I retired from a government job
several years ago because of a chronic health condition.
Unfortunately, I left before my pension would have kicked in, and I
had no disability insurance. If it were not for Google Answers, I'd be
lying in a gutter somewhere, begging for people's spare change. ;-)

Best regards,

You are most welcome. Answers are important to me. My brain does not
work as well since open-heart surgery and the person who used to fill
in the blanks died. Thus, when I cannot think of something I will
just turn to "Google".

Thanks again.
