Question ID: 580599
Music query: I'm wanting to identify more closely an opera soprano of
the first part of the 20c., OLGA FORRAI. I'm also wanting to identify
ROSE LANDWEHR, another music performer of the same period.

Both of these performing artists worked in New York City in the 1930s.
And both of them performed at least on some occassions, I am sure, on
radio station WNYC.

What sort of information are you seeking on these two performers?

There may be old newspaper articles from the period covering their
performances, but there's no way of knowing in advance if any
biographical information would be included.

Let us know a bit more about what you're after.

By the way, there seems to be a fair amount of info out ther on Ms.
Forrai, but not on Ms Landwehr. Let us know how to handle this as
well.

I need some way to describe their careers, especially date of birth
and decease, preferably so info about whom they studied with, or where
they performed. Somewhere there must be a lot about Olga Forrai,
because there is a New York City foundation named after her, though I
can't locate their address.

Landwehr seems very obscure. I don't know what to say about that. For
adequate info on one or the other I would make it $10.00.

For a start, here is the address of the OF Foundation:
" The Olga Forrai Foundation's Grants award scholarships of between
$7,000-$10,000 to musicians and vocalists who are residents of one of
New York City's five boroughs. Funds should be used for study and
performances. Applications can be requested by writing to The Olga
Forrai Foundation, 420 Lexington Avenue #2150, New York, NY 10170."

Rose Landwehr does seem very obscure. Do you have any details that
could narrow a search? WNYC doesn't help. From where do you know her
name?

Thanks for the address of the OF Foundation. Rose Landwehr's name I
have from the transcript of a 1940s radio broadcast at WNYC. The
transcripts are unpublished material. The group of people, though,
were just about all German refugees. Many of them were very famous.
All of them were extremely competent, and usually interested in New
Music since they were performing works by Berg, Schoenberg, but also
the works of Schubert.
Perhaps you could help also with the other question I've listed here,
looking for a couple of other vocalists?
