Even though I clear out old addresses from the address book of
Entourage, which I have on my Mac (10.3.9), these defunct addresses
continue drop down from the address box when I start to type in names.
Is there another way to clear away the memory of these old addresses
from the drop-down box?

Hi mccook,

I haven't noticed you around for awhile, glad to see you are still here!

Try this:

Go to "Mail & News Preferences"
Click the "Compose" tab.
Scroll down and find "Recent Addresses".
Clear the cache.

"What I've done is start a message and choose several of the addresses
from the autocomplete dropdown. Then I'd highlight each message and
choose 'add to address book'. Then I'd delete the message without
sending it and chase the entries down in the address book and delete
them. Tedious, as I said, but it worked."
"In Entourage X, go into "Mail & News Preferences", then click on the
"Compose" tab. It's at the bottom, under "Recent addresses".

"In Entourage X there is an option in the preferences to clear this
address Cache (Mail & News prefs; Compose tab). You can also (in the
same place) turn off the display of these addresses (but still keep
the ?auto completeš
of names in your address book).
In both Entourage v9 and in vX individual items can be removed by
adding an entry to the address book that EXACTLY matches the rogue
entry in the history list and then deleting it.
Alternatively, just wait a few days/weeks. The remembered addresses
are prioritised by age & frequency and the list is limited to a
maximum of 200, so eventually your mistakes will fall out at the
bottom."

I don't have Entourage, so I'll wait to hear back from you before
posting this as an answer.

Hummer,

Worked like a charm. Please post as an answer.

Thanks for the concern about my whereabouts, by the way. It was a busy
summer and early fall at work. Very little of what I do required the
swift and expert assistance of researchers like you. But Google
Answers almost never fails me. Thanks for your assistance tonight.

Thanks, Tom, I'm glad to hear the solution I found worked. Here it is again -

Go to "Mail & News Preferences"
Click the "Compose" tab.
Scroll down and find "Recent Addresses".
Clear the cache.

Well, you always post interesting questions, you have quite the range
of interests. I was surprised to see that this is only the third
question I've answered, I guess it seems like more because when I
notice one from you, I always read it and often work on it. At any
rate, it's nice to hear that our little group is there for you when
you need us.

Take care,

Hummer-ga: Thanks for the thanks. Not really a big deal, but in a
forum as big as this, I think it would be better if we went by our
Google Address names, rather than first names. I may have used a
personal name once or twicee before, but I have been advised not to do
this by wise friends. Again, thanks for your help. mccook-ga.

Hmm, mccook, the reason I switched was because of the way you signed
your clarification yesterday! Anyway, I like "mccook". hummer

mistake like that. Thanks for pointing it out. With best wishes,
