offer training for so called "HALO" jumps (high altitude low opening).
Usually this is the reserve of military aplpications but i am aware
that some places offer it to civilians however i'm having difficulty
finding any! I'm happy to travel anywhere but the school must be
english speaking.

Hello Esther,

I can understand why you had a hard time finding HALO training -
they DO seem elusive!! I found some training sites that may fill your
needs, however. Some that looked "iffy", I have placed at the end of
the answer. It would seem that these training schools don't feel the
need to publish informative web sites - and maybe they don't really
need them, thanks to word-of-mouth business.

   HALO Jumper Blog
========================================

?I got started right away on the D-license, since the United States
Parachute Association (USPA) was about to increase the minimum number
of jumps to qualify for a ?D? from 200 to 500. I only had about 150 or
so when I decided to do the HALO jump, so I knew I had to hustle. 500
jumps was a long way off from 150, even at 5-7 jumps a weekend.

I started studying for my C & D license written tests and practicing
my landing accuracy. You need to be able to land in a 2-meter (about 6
feet wide) circle 25 times. I did a lot of hop and pops - jumps from
5000 feet where you deploy your main canopy a few seconds after
leaving the plane - to finish up my accuracy jumps. You do hop and
pops because they are cheaper. It is less money per jump if you don?t
ride the plane all the way up to 12,500 feet. Its also less
distracting if you jump solo in a relatively empty sky, allowing you
to line up on your target and concentrate on landing right on the
bulls eye. Last, you can do a lot more hop and pops than regular jumps
in a day, since it only takes a few minutes to get up to altitude.

I found a local flight physician that would sign off the flight
physical for me. He was very interested in the HALO jump and asked a
million questions as he checked my heart rate and blood pressure. I
could have gotten a certificate for just the jump, but the doctor
talked me into getting a pilots certificate good if I ever want to get
a pilots license. Maybe someday ? right now I like jumping out of
planes more than flying them.

The next item on my list of things to do for the HALO jump was to get
my high altitude chamber ride out of the way. That took a lot of phone
calls and emails. The US Air Force was in the process of closing down
many of their high altitude chambers in a cost cutting move. The one
out at Edwards Air Force Base (very close to me) had just closed, so
the nearest one was up near Sacramento at Beal AFB. Beal is a good 400
miles from my house, so it made things more difficult than a day trip
to Edwards would have been. The other problem was that since there
were only a few operational altitude chambers in the US, they are
frequently booked up with active duty military personnel that need
their certification. I kept bugging the folks in charge of the Beal
chamber and finally got a reservation.?

I looked up the USPA, but found nothing about HALO jumps. You may find

The Mutual Training
-------------------

?As practised by the SAS, free-fall parachuting is more than
usually hazardous and totally different from the basic static-line
techniques used by the Army since the Second World War.
A six-week HALO ('High-Altitude, Low-Opening') course of about
forty descents in Britain, and at Pau in France, drastically
introduces recruits to the art of free-fall stability, with an initial
descent from 12,000 feet, or about sixty seconds of unimpeded
fall, after only three days' ground training. The basic task is
theoretically simple: to remain stable in a face-to-earth, starfish
posture, with the body's centre of gravity at about solar-plexus
level. This is achieved by arching the back and placing the
limbs symmetrically so that air pressure on them is uniform.
After leaving the aircraft, the jumper will accelerate for the first
twelve seconds of fall -- about 1480 feet -- to terminal velocity of
120mph.?

Sky Diving Air
---------------
?Upon completion of the Tandem , you are eligible to enter the
Accelerated Freefall program. The Accelerated Freefall program, or
"AFF", is an accelerated method of learning freefall skydiving skills.
All jumps are made from 14,500 ft with freefalls of 60 seconds. The
student is equipped with main and reserve parachutes (both are square
type high performance gliding canopies as used on the Tandem Jump),
radio receivers for ground assistance after the student opens the main
canopy, an altimeter, automatic activation device (AAD) for the
reserve, and other safety equipment. The AFF program can be completed
in seven jumps provided the student has mastered the required
skills. On the first three AFF jumps the student is accompanied by two
jumpmasters who initially act as "training wheels", stabilize the
student in freefall, observe his progress, and correct errors in body
position or technique?
