Car driving test trouble I am having troubles passing my numerous driving tests. The main cause according to the authorities involved is that I don't look ahead far enough, and thus don't anticipate traffic changes, and miss signs. I however find it really difficult to keep looking constantly ahead, my focus tends to wander close to the car. One of the things that comes to my mind is that because I drive a scooter daily I tend to concentrate on every gap in the road in from of me, instead looking far ahead. Another issue is that i sometimes look at eg a sign but don't register it , like don't see it in my mind. My question: how can i develop a steady focus on the road ahead and stop missing traffic and signs. I have good a vision. |

Dennis, It sounds like you understand what the problem is and also the reason why you have it; makes sense. And it is a problem for other beginners, the feeling that they have to look right down at the front of the car to be sure that it is in the middle of the lane. A car is an extension of oneself, like wearing a backpack and learning to allow for the additional space needed to get around without bumping into things. An experienced driver "wears" his car as though it were an extension of himself. You need more experience. I hope you live somewhere where you have a learner's permit and don't have to pay for lessons. Find someone who will watch you and remind you to keep your eyes up, and practice in areas where you don't already know every sign. And remember, they haven't criticized your driving, per se, how you handle the car, so I expect you do that well enough that steering, etc., come automatically. Of course, after failing the test a few times, you are even more nervous when taking it again. Prove to yourself first, that you can watch the traffic. Finally, remember that the test is for your own safety and that of others. Beginners have a higher accident rate just for this reason. Good luck, Myoarin |

Thanks. The thing is that I can keep my attention on signs and traffic for a while but when i have to look away or back, the focus returns then to the middle of the road not far away from the car, and i have troubles reminding myself to look ahead and watch the signs, which i usually forget. Unfortunately i have to pay a lot really for every lesson, and have to minimize number of lessons otherwise I'd end up paying thousands. Which limits my training experience and running things in my mind is not really helpful. I have even come up with an idea of glasses that are closed half way from below, so i can focus on the road high ahead, wondering if this would help.. |

Dennis, I would recommend the taped glasses, but maybe a little sign on the dashboard would help remind you. Just: "Look up" or "traffic" or "signs?" might help. It seems to be just a matter of breaking a habit. I am sorry that this requires more driving lessons. Talk to your instructor about consentrating on this problem instead of - maybe - his/her just doing "the routine", or find another instructor if it is possible to change. Good luck and (learn to) drive safely, Myoarin |

I am a professional truck driver and former driver trainer. There is a defensive driving system called the smith system. There are 5 keys to this system. Aim High in steering is one of the keys. It takes a little practice, but you will find that the farther ahead you look the easier it is to stay in your lane. In the city try to look several blocks ahead of your vehicle. Pick a spot in the center of the lane you are traveling in and steer towards it. Most drivers are afraid if the they look to far forward they will not see something right in front of them. This is not true, when you are focused several blocks in front you're perifiral vision will pick it up. another thing that might help you is try to relax when you are driving. when you are nervous you're brain tends to block out things. the more relaxed you are the more information you can process. I have driven 18 wheelers into the most tense situations like downtown chicago, houston, and newyork city. I have done so successfully by reminding myself to stay calm and relaxed. just take youre time, stay relaxed and dont allow yourself to get flustered or frustrated. hope this helps. |
