Question ID: 581431
Here's the deal, my computer has an Athlon Xp 2800+ Barton on a FIC
AU31 motherboard. My bios version is Phoenix Technologies TCB418G
date:08/08/03. The problem is that the processor is clocked at 1250mhz
and should be at 2085mhz, however when I tried to fix the problem in
the bios it wouldn't let me change the bus speed. My question is how
do I get my processor to run at the appropriate speed?

Most motherboards allow you to adjust the processor clock
speed by way of a series of jumpers on a small area of
the motherboard which determine multipliers. Settings
should be defined in the documentation for the motherboard.
Do you not have the documentation for your board?

No I do not, however I found a jumper labeled "fsb" and tried it on
both settings and still was unable to get the processor back to speed.

The manuals for most DIC boards can be found here:
ftp://ftp.fica.com/manuals/motherboards/

I couldn't find one for the AU31 specifically, but from
browsing them in general, I've concluded that your board
does allow for adjustment of the clock speed via the BIOS.

Note the the FSB setting is different from the CPU clock
speed. You need to go to the Frequency/Voltage Control
page in the BIOS. There *is* a setting for the FSB
Frequency on that page, and you need to set it according
to the specs for your CPU, which, from what I've found,
is 333MHz.

To change the CPU clock speed, however, you would use
the CPU Ratio setting. This would be where to set the
multiplier for the CPU to provide you with the correct
clock speed. I'm not sure what the options are other
than Default, which yours is probably set to, but it
might be settings like 2x, 3x, etc. You'll need to
experiment to find the setting which gives you 2085MHz,
preferably starting from the lowest setting, to be safe.

There's also a setting for CPU Interface, be it Optimal
or Agressive. This is for overclocking, and is separate
from the multiplier. I'd recommend you leave this at
Optimal. There's a similar setting for System Performance.

There's very little useful documentation, even in the
official manual, so I'm making suggestions based on my
experience and intuition.

The problem is that in fact for some reason that I am unable to
determine I am not given the option to adjust bus speed or multiplier
in the bios. The multiplier is fine at 12.5 but the bus is stuck at
100mhz.

You said:

"The multiplier is fine at 12.5 but the bus is stuck at 100mhz."

This makes it sound like the BIOS is currently allowing you
the option to adjust the multiplier, but not the bus speed.

It occurs to me that if you set the multiplier to 6.25, the
option to adjust the bus speed to 333MHz might then become
available. This would give you a CPU speed of 2081.25MHz

Since I don't have the ability to see or adjust your BIOS
settings, I can only guess, but that's what I'd try. I'm
thinking that, with the multiplier set so high, the option
to adjust the bus speed above 100 simply isn't made available.
Lowering the multiplier may change that.

Let me know where this takes you...

Yea it doesn't let me change the multiplier either, but for the 2800+
barton it's supposed to be at 12.5 because 12.5x167= 2087

 thanks

Has it always been like this or has it just manifested itself?

I would try resetting the CMOS. I had the same problem with an ASUS
board, and just ending up resetting the CMOS and trying the settings
again and again until it worked.

no luck :/ but i noticed that in the setup menu it says above the cpu
clock speed it says in grey letters "setting to incorrect values may
cause system to malfunction"

                        thanks

Just a commment: One thing you may want to try is to reset your BIOS
settings to default and see if that changes anything. There should be
an option to do this in the BIOS itself, or you can always remove the
motherboard battery for a few seconds if all else fails.

as far as i know its been like this since , I think either switching
the cpu or reformatting im not really sure, i'll try resetting the
cmos, should I just take out the battery for a while or is there a
better way to do it
 thanks

There's probably a jumper not far from the battery. Disconnect the
power lead, move the jumper to the other position for 10-15 seconds,
then put the jumper back and retry.

If not, try the battery as you mentioned.

Thanks.
