I am looking for a free program to alter some text. I would like to be
able to take a list of words and essentialy have the program arrange
them in the shape of a double helix (DNA). I have seen commercials and
such that have DNA strands made out of words, or pictures. Does anyone
know how I could achieve this affect?

I found this site
http://www.dpgraph.com/
and although it is not free it is really low cost at $10
From reading their documentation it appears that to share the files
you create the person receiving them would need to download their free
viewer. It would be similar to having to download Acrobat Reader in
order to view .pdf files.

From their website, someone created a double helix anamation which you
can download for free.

I doubt that you can add text though. I didn't download the free
viewer and open the file.

In looking up software I have come to believe that what you might be
after is really an animation, a movie, not just a flat graphic, would
that be correct?

I have not found that animation software is cheap. That doesn't
surprise me, since I am sure the engineering behind software that can
create animations is formidable, so it makes sense that the sales
price of the software is is going to be high.
