I am looking at getting as much info as possible on the current state
of the Australian Airline Industry. I would like to know things such
as, how many people it employs, who are the major stakeholders, what
sort of $ it brings into national income, history, etc

Coupled to this, any info on industrial relations issues that have
occurred in the past and who was involved i.e. strikes, bans, sit-ins
etc

Dear wconway-ga,

I believe these links below should provide you with a fairly
comprehensive coverage of your question. The one thing that may be
missing is good, up-to-date data on the numbers employed in the
industry, however, this may be contained deep in the body of some of
the documents referred to below. As there is so much information here
I have not read it all, if I have missed something do get back to me
by way of clarification.

As a starting point, this is a brief review of aviation in Australia.

In 2003 a very comprehensive research report was published on the
Australian Airline Industry. It is available from the Australian
Parliament web site. This provides a good comprehensive description of
the industry.

That info is awesome, I can tease a lot out of it. Just one final
point, is there any more specific info on unions involved in the
industry? I know that Qantas alone deals with up to 16 unions, it
would be great to get a list of them and even their membership
numbers.

Thanks again.

Dear wconway-ga,

Focussing on the airline by name has helped to produce some
information on the unions.

The Australian Services Union describes itself as ?the biggest
Australian union covering airline industry workers. Our members work
for Qantas, Impulse, Virgin Blue, Regional Express, Eastern Australia
Airlines, Sunstate Airlines, Singapore Airlines, United Airlines,
Malaysia Airlines and other overseas airlines, as well as contractors
in the industry.?
http://www.asu.asn.au/airlines/

On one page it discusses the introduction of random drug and alcohol
testing for airline workers at Qantas. A petition to the airline was
signed by the below unions. Therefore I believe that all listed
unions have members employed by Qantas. To identify the number of
members for each rather takes us out of the original question
parameters. However, I have copied below the web sites for each of
these unions should you wish to explore each one.
