Hi jess05,

Please let me know if this is what you are looking for.

621493 Freestanding Ambulatory Surgical and Emergency Centers
This U.S. industry comprises establishments with physicians and other
medical staff primarily engaged in (1) providing surgical services
(e.g., orthoscopic and cataract surgery) on an outpatient basis or (2)
providing emergency care services (e.g., setting broken bones,
treating lacerations, or tending to patients suffering injuries as a
result of accidents, trauma, or medical conditions necessitating
immediate medical care) on an outpatient basis. Outpatient surgical
establishments have specialized facilities, such as operating and
recovery rooms, and specialized equipment, such as anesthetic or X-ray
equipment.

I came across an industry source that puts the current number of
outpatient surgical facilities in the US at more than 4,000.

The difference between their number and the Census numbers that
hummer-ga cited may have to do with the definition of "freestanding"
used by Census. Perhaps the industry numbers include facilities that
aren't regarded as freestanding.

Let us know what you think.

Thank you for the information. I think the 4,000 number sounds more
accurate and agree that it may have something to do with the
definition of "freestanding." I would really appreciate a source for
the 4,000 number.

Jess,

Thanks for getting back to me on this.

According to The Federated Ambulatory Surgery Association there are
more than 4,000 ambulatory (outpatient) surgery centers in the US:

http://www.fasa.org/faqaboutasc.html

Q. How long have outpatient surgery centers been in existence?

A. The first ASC opened in 1970. Today more than 8 million surgeries
are performed each year in the more than 4,000 surgery centers across
the United States.

The number appears to have trended upward in recent years, from the
low-3,000 range:

http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Ambulatory_Surgery_Center
An ambulatory surgery center or "ASC" is a health care facility that
specializes in providing surgery services in an outpatient setting.
...In the United States, over six million surgeries a year are
performed in approximately 3,300 ASC's across the United States.

http://www.ifsurgicalcenter.com/whychoose.html
...There are 3,644 Outpatient Surgical Centers in America today - a
50% increase since 1996. [thanks bobbie7-ga]

http://www.ophthalmologymanagement.com/article.aspx?article=86225
ASCs vs. Hospitals

...Today, there is a total of about 3,800 single-specialty and
multispecialty ASCs in the United States, Of these, about 700 to 800
are operated as ophthalmology-only centers.

It's difficult to always know exactly what dates are being referenced
by the above cites, but from the context of the pages, the data appear
to represent a recent increasing trend in the number of ASC's in the
US.

I trust this information fully meets your needs.

However, please do not rate this answer if you find you need
additional information. Just post a Request for Clarification, and
I'm at your service.

Thanks.
