I have a photoshop file (psd) on my desktop, and it's icon was changed
somehow to one I've never seen before. It is a cupped hand with palm
up, and a mouse sitting in the hand with the top of the cable cut off.
I can't attach the file here to show you, but I'm hoping that the
description I've given is enough.

I'd like to know what program this icon is from. I haven't installed
anything recently. I'm concerned it came from some kind of virus,
spyware, etc.

You can identify the source file for the icon by right-clicking
on the icon and selecting Properties. On the Shortcut tab, click
on the Change Icon button and, by default, you should see the
name of the file from which the icon was derived, as well as the
path to that file.

Let me know where this takes you...

I've checked the properties of the file in question and there isn't a
shortcut tab at all. It is a photoshop document, and the tabs are:
general, photoshop image, caption, keywords, credits, origin, summary.
I've also gone into each tab and searched for any info about the icon
that would show a path, but there is nothing there.

Any other suggestions?

Howdy freakfarm-ga,

The icon you reference is associated with Microsoft's "Remote Assistance"
program. Here is the icon, in the context of a remote assistance setup.
http://www.wown.com/img/gif_wxp/wxprmas4.gif

"How to use remote assistance in Windows XP"
http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxprmass.htm

"To send out a request for help / support, to send an 'Invitation for
Remote Assistance', select from the Windows Start-menu : 'Programs' /
'Remote Assistance' ..."

If you go to "Start" and then "Programs" the "Remote Assistance" icon
and program should appear right under your "Outlook Express" entry.

If you need any clarification, please free to ask.

Google search on: "remote assistance"

You checked the file's properties, which must be because you
have the actual file on your desktop, and not just a shortcut.
To accomplish what I was suggesting, you'd need to create a
shortcut to the file. Then right click on the shortcut and
proceed as I outlined.

From what denco-ga has found out, it seems your .psd files
have somehow become erroneously associated with the Remote
Assistance program. If you need assistance with correcting
this, open a new question. You can ask for me by including
my name in the subject line.
