The windows in my mother's apartment are so tight that even I have trouble opening them. I have shown her how to wedge them open with a 2 x 4 and a fulcrum but I was wondering if there is another solution, maybe a link to something on the market. | |

Like Tutuz says, we'd use soap in old wood double-hungs. A candle works, too. Sanding the channels helps. |

New Windows? Your Mother should not have this problem. I'd call the installer and explain the difficulty. If they are any type of decent company, they will have a solution and come out to do it for free. |

A friend of mine has these new windows that have a metal... um, flange sort of thingy inside the track that acts as a friction device to keep the window in wahtever position you put it in (am I making any sense?). He whacked the strip with a hammer to get it out of the way because a window was binding. Now it moves with no friction, but won't stay open either. The goof uses an old slide rule to prop it open and offers kids a buck if they can identify what it is. |
