What is the going rate (per word/per article/?) for reading and
critiquing stories, poems, opinion articles of various lengths. We
are a small company that publishes stories on their product labels
weekly. Submissions are piling up - need to know going pay rate for a
reader to filter them.

Pay rates vary from place to place, so it would be helpful to know
where you are located. Are you planning to hire a full-time employee,
or a contract worker?

That response really doesn't give me the current information I'm
seeking. I'm not looking to source the reader, I need to determine a
fair market rate to pay someone when I get them.

Thanks.

For what it's worth, a long time ago I once met a person who told me
he occasionally worked as a reader for book clubs--he'd read books
submitted to the club for inclusion and write recommendations as to
whether or not the club should offer the book to its members. I think
I recall him saying that he got $50.00 per book read and report
written. This would've been about 7 or 8 years ago, so I imagine rates
would've gone up since then. (Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if
bookclubs aren't bothering to hire outside readers anymore...)

Not exactly the kind of work you're talking about, but maybe close
enough for you to extrapolate a fee structure that works for you...
