I pay tuition for my daughter in otsego county N.Y. I just bought a house for investment in the town my daughter attends school.. Is there a precedent I can cite to adjust my tuition payment with the new taxes I will be paying?I am not living in the school district, and thus have been paying tuition for her, now however I will be a taxpayer in that district, tho not living in the investment house..Can I ask to subtract the taxes (which will be less)from the tuition and pay the difference???I hope I can will await responces..dad |

This is the 2nd time I've recently seen a question regarding tuition paid to a public school. Why are you paying tuition? |

Strato, As you may have recognized, some of us have never heard of tuition for public schools, but it sure exists. Here are a couple of sites from other states for general information: http://www.arlington.k12.va.us/schoolboard/sbp/Student%20Services/25-2.1-admission-placement.pdf http://dpi.wi.gov/sms/pdf/twparinf.pdf And I found a NJ document form for paying between school districts, apparently applicable for areas where the nearest school is in the neighboring district. Unfortunately, I have been able to find similar information for NY State, but it must exist, if not on the web then from the school district. It is none of our business why or with whom your daughter is living in Otsego County, but it could have a bearing on the possibility of getting a waiver of the tuition. It looks from the other states that they are really look for residency, perhaps because your solution (if it is one) was not considered, or because they were so clever as to consider that one residence only justifies schooling for one family (regardless if your tenents have kids). I hope someone is more successful at finding the NY details on tuition, but at least, I hope, you have an idea of what to ask for locally. Good luck, Myoarin |

Myoarin, Thanks for the comment. It is helpful... and my daughter lives with me and her Mom, in our primary residence on the district line just 2 miles from the school. The school I pay taxes for, is 6 miles away. That n.j form is interesting as it sounds like it applies to me.... |

Strato, I hope it helps a little. Here is the NJ site, click on the first item and you will get the inter-district contract. http://www.state.nj.us/njded/finance/tuition/ In your daughter's case (glad she is living with you both!) it would seem to be a question of whether her attending school in the adjacent district is voluntary or the result of geographic factors, your maybe living remote from the appropriate school in your own district, and then, of course, we don't know how NY handles this, but I hope that you can find out more, and something in your favor.
