I am a U.S. citizen marrying a man in Canada. I would like to drive
my newly purchased car accross the border to Canada. It is on a
10-day temporary registration. Will I be able to cross the border and
register my autmobile in Canada? Also, will my husband be able to
drive the car legally as a Canadian?

Hi thomasology,

Importing a car into Canada is fairly straight forward assuming your
vehicle is admissible without needing any modifications. Therefore,
first thing to do is to confirm that your car is on the list of cars
that are admissible to Canada.

"Make sure your vehicle is admissible and can be modified to meet
Canadian requirements by checking Transport Canada's List of Vehicles
Admissible from the United States."

At the border, you will need your title documents, registration, sales
receipt and $182 Cdn ($197 in QC) (the fees will be increased November
1). Within ten days, you'll receive an inspection document and you'll
need to take your car to the nearest Canadian Tire store to have the
car inspected. You'll find full details at the following link.

How to Import Your Vehicle Into Canada
*What to do before you import
*What to do at the border
*What to do after the vehicle enters Canada
*Notice: change in Registrar of Imported Vehicle fees Nov. 1
*Numbers you'll need
*Partners Only

Once the care passes inspection, it's just a matter of going to your
nearest registration office to get your provincial plates (take all of
your importation and inspection papers with you).

Citizenship doesn't really matter in regards to importing a car.
Vehicles can be imported as personal effects upon immigration, or
imported by Canadian residents (immigration is another whole
question). I don't know if any of the above links mentions this, but
make sure your car is very clean (steam cleaned) and is free of all
soil for importation. In regards to your husband driving your car,
that is not a problem either (it's the same as in the States).

I hope this helps to guide you way through importation. If you have
any questions, please post a clarification request and wait for me to
respond before closing/rating my answer.

Thank you,
hummer
