I'm suffering from "tip of the tongue" phenomena for the past three
days...Please help...I am looking for the word that is used to
describe the "approved" literature books that are used at the
university level....It is known that woman and minority writers have
fought the .........for years trying to get accepted....What the heck
is it??  I have almost blurted it out several times but just can't
seem to get it beyond the very back of my brain....Help!!  I'll know
the word when I see it...Thanks

I think you're probably thinking of the word "canon."

You don't know how close I was to remembering this word and concept. 
I almost choked on the word several times but couldn't bring it up.
