Dear starfishyvonne-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question. What I have compiled for you is a fascinating history of the
child protection movement including extensive information about the
major figures. Do make it a point to read about each one of these
individuals as each played a major role in the movement. I found quite
fascinating (and of course sad) the story of the abused little waif,
Mary Ellen Wilson, upon whose testimony the court rendered a decision
to imprison her abuser. Henry Bergh who, by all accounts, was a
decent, generous and compassionate human being if ever there was one,
found the story so compelling that he dedicated his own funds and
ultimately much of his life to the child protection concept. Over the
years many others of note have followed in his footsteps and carried
on the movement.

Here you will find a brief list of the major figures involved from
that time to the present:

MAJOR FIGURES:

HENRY BERGH - established the first organized child protective
institution in the world-- Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Children (SPCC) (On Tuesday, April 27, 1875, the SPCC was incorporated
as The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children)
(NYSPCC). Bergh was also the society?s first vice president (and
office he shared with co-vice-president Eldridge T. Gerry)

ELBRIDGE T. GERRY ? shared the first vice-presidency of the SPCC with
Henry Bergh. Gerry authored the ?purpose? of the SPCC:
?"To rescue little children from the cruelty and demoralization which
neglect, abandonment and improper treatment engender; to aid by all
lawful means in the enforcement of the laws intended for their
protection and benefit; to secure by like means the prompt conviction
and punishment of all persons violating such laws and especially such
persons as cruelly ill treat and shamefully neglect such little
children of whom they claim the care, custody or control."

MARY ELLEN WILSON - The horrific and senseless sufferings of the
little girl, ?Mary Ellen? gained international attention and
ultimately led to the founding of the New York Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the first organization of its kind,
in 1874, through the efforts of Henry Bergh, Eldridge T. Gerry, and
John D. Wright.

I only supplied with what you specifically requested: "good SOURCES of
information". In answer to your question, yes, it took a couple of
hours to round them all up and read them all.

Thanks a lot for all the information. I wish that you had included a
brief summary of each of the more general sources, but I know that it
was a big project. Did it take you a long time to pull it all
together?
