My sister recently died from cancer and we were wondering if there was
anything that we could name after her, in her memory.

We thought of naming a star after her but discovered it had no real significance as
the name would only be allocated to a star in that specific company's
database, not universally.

We are looking for something more
meaningful. We heard you can name a lake in Canada because there are
so many, but we may be mistaken. Anything you can find would be most
appreciated.

At most we probably have about £1000 ($1770 USD) from family and
friends' donations but we
don't need to spend all of the money on this. Of course if something
good and cheaper is
found, more donations can be made to Cancer Charities but she asked,
she knew it was 'selfish', but wanted us to name something after her -
I'm sure you're allowed to be selfish in that situation.

Let me know if listing price is no sufficient for research time.

Thanks.
We looked at roses and wrote to a few people but apparently it would
be about £7000 for a proper naming. Any other suggestions will also be
appreciated as is that for your time.

How about naming a new variety of rose after your sister?

Howdy edejl-ga,

Condolences on your loss.

One of my aunts was a grade school teacher and a supporter of the library
in our hometown.

On her death, we bought some child-size furniture for the childrens' part
of the library with nice brass plaques.

I have seen benches placed in parks with similar plaques.

Not on such a grand scale as a lake, but more personal and practical.

Looking Forward, denco-ga - Google Answers Researcher

Good idea, Denco.
Maybe your sister's church (an assumption) needs a piece of furniture,
or could use somehting that is is not entirely necessary: pew(s),
chairs for the wedding couple, a lid for the baptismal font,
restoration of something,

Here are some suggestions. You might name one these in honor of your sister:

A fund

A scholarship

A city holiday (with the cooperation of the mayor)

An annual festival

An annual charity event (race, concert, sale, block-party, etc)

A civic organization

A specific dessert (with the cooperation of a local restaurant who,
incidentally might be all to happy to get the publicity)

A child

A thoroughbred racehorse (with the cooperation of a breeder ? who
knows, she may win the derby someday)

A race car (with the cooperation of a notable celeb driver or sponsor
who also might be eager to get publicity)

A previously unnamed mountain or creek (with the help of your local government)

A local building (with the help of the government or local building owner)

A local park or recreation area (with the help of the mayor or Town Council)

Good luck;

How about donating the money in her memory to an organization that
either researches cancer cures or provides hospice (or similar)
services to those with cancer. I'm sure your sister would be most
pleased by this.
