I lost a source that said there were some 200 communal societies in
the US in the 1800s.  Since there was no "Communism" in those days, I
was using communistic in its factual sense of everyone working common
land and no private property.  I'd really like to get a statistic and
not a list of books.
Thanks for any help you might be able to give me.  Unfortunately, my
questions are not as simple as what year did Columbus set sail for
India.

I am not sure just what you mean by "communistic societies".  Would
that include religious communes?  They were perhaps better
"communists" than what the political movement(s) produced.  You can

Questia, the online booksite lists several books on communism in USA.
