For $2?? This needs to be discussed at multiple levels...

1. What is the consequence of preferrential programs for world trade
and globalization? There are significant issues that lead to
anti-competitive practices and the interference of free trade.

2. How successful has NAFTA been? At a macro level the automotive
industry has benefited from the removal of duty rates on parts that
allow the industry to take advantage of cheaper labor in Canada and
Mexico. However the administration and complexity of NAFTA has meant
that only companies willing to make substantial investment in the
appropriate administrative infrastructure have benfited.

3. You then to look at the consequences of the removal of NAFTA.
Would that mean an already floundering domestic car market would be at
the mercy of foreign markets like Korea or China? Would foreign car
manufacturers (Toyota, Nissan etc)who moved to North America to take
advantage of NAFTA move abroad, resulting in job losses?

There is no simple answer to your question, national economies
(Mexico) are increasingly dependent on NAFTA, however it leads to
anti-competitive practices and can only really be taken advantage of
by certian industries. Personally, I disagree with protectionist
activities like pref programs and subsidies, but I don't need to get
elected anytime soon ;-)

Good luck...

I would say specifically that the car market, specifically the
performance industry has relied on shipping techniques for the
majority of its sales. As to NAFTA itself, car manufacturers have
been building plants over here since the 70's, successfuly thwarting
american attempts to protect its own industrues. If we are to be
successful, it is important for american car manufacturers to start
putting out the type of products consumers are searching for, power
and price. Check out this site for more info..
