Windows (not the brand name, the actual windows themselves) in XP have
three states: minimized, maximized, and in-between. Whenever I click
on a link the content opens in a window in state 3 above -- in
between. I would prefer content to open in a window that is
maximized. I would have thought there was some simple way to set this
option, but if there is I cannot find it. My (two) questions are:
(1)can I force XP to open content in a maximized window, and if so (2)
how?

You mentioned clicking on a link. Are you asking about opening a
program from a shortcut in the file system or the Start menu
structure, or are you asking about clicking on a link in Internet
Explorer to open a web page in a new window? Or something else? The
answer may vary depending on what software is displaying the window.

In my question I am thinking of clicking on a link that is expected to
open in Internet Explorer...

Try clicking and dragging on all sides of the window to make it as
large as possible. The next time you open a window it should be that
size.
Not completely maximized but good enough for me.

Maximize the first window you open once, and all windows from then on
should be maximized. You may have to repeat for different programs
that open in their own window. But once you do it once, it should
continue to stay that way.

Hi hapgood-ga,

Follow the instructions below exactly and your problem should be solved.

Right click the shortcut icon for IE next to the Start button, choose
Properties, change it from 'normal' to 'maximized'. Now open it.
Now right click any link on the page, choose Open In New
Window....don't maximize it....instead, use the mouse to resize it to
what you want it to be.
Now close the FIRST window you opened, and then close the new one you just resized.

Reopen IE from the shortcut icon again, and all windows from now on
will be the size you chose and created.

Hope this help. :)

I don't understand this. When you say 'Now open it.' what is 'it'?
In the next sentence you make reference to 'the page'. What page?
I'm not at all clear from your answer if I can set the system to always
open content in the maximized condition or whether I am forced to come
as close as I can in the in-between state. To me, that is not
optimal.

right CLick on IE in Quick Launch menu next to Strart Button and click
properties. Then Click onShortcut TAB and Select Maximised under RUN
option, then click on Ok. Restart computer, it will work.

Dont forget to send me msg if it works at natidada at yahoo.com
