With an IBM thinkpad T40 Laptop running Windows 2000 professional, and
having one screen connector on the back, can one connect an external
monitor showing a different screen image from the internal LCD Laptop
screen? The mouse cursor could then move from left screen to right
screen as if it were one wide screen. Email and to-do lists on one
screen, whatever else you
are doing, on the other!

Howdy curiouscat4-ga,

It appears that one way, if not the only way, to accomplish what
you describe, is to get a docking station for your T40, which runs
just under $80.00 or so.

"The IBM T40 line and the Dell Latitude line also have a docking
station that has room for a half-length PCI card, so any laptop
that can dock with those can use an additional PCI video card."

"I've done EXACTLY this on my work laptop which was an IBM thinkpad
T40.

... it was set up in a docking station and it took some fiddling,
but I basically just booted up with the lid open and the second
screen plugged to the dock. since this was just a replication of
the side D-sub i don't see why this wouldn't work like that.

boot up with the 2nd screen attached and windows should recognise
it. then go into the screen settings and the 2nd screen should be
there. then you need to play around with the settings to get the
screen out of clone mode (tick the 'extend windows desktop to
this monitor' or something like it box) then drag the 2 virtual
screens around to the arrangement you physically have and that
should be it...."

that sounds worth a try, for sure. I already have a docking station.
The machine is a work machine from a large corporation where the "IT"
guys "roll out" a "build" of the computer and we don't have much
leeway to load drivers they have not included, but I will give it a
try. Either way, I'm sure you earned your keep. But let me give it a
try and give you some feedback before you post it as an anwser.
thanks!

I learned from this that I should see a box to check called "extend
desktop" when I view the properties of the monitor under the control
panel. On the computer in question, no such box exists, possibly due
the specifics of the OS version rolled out by IT. Conequently, I
don't know if your answer is good or not. I suggest you consider the
question answered and we can both forget about it thereafter. Thanks
for trying!

If you don't mind, curiouscat4-ga, I certainly don't mind working this
a bit more. A few diagnostic questions, please.

I take it you have placed the laptop in the docking station and then
attached your second monitor to the docking station.

The next step appears to be having the laptop open, the second monitor
on, and then turning on the laptop.

Once booted, you should go to Start, Setting, Control Panel, System,
Hardware, Device Manager and click the plus signs next to both Display
adapters and Monitors.

See if you have two display adapters and two monitors listed there. If
there are not, then you could at adding a "half length" PCI video card
to the docking station, as they suggest in this prior noted information.

"The IBM T40 line and the Dell Latitude line also have a docking station
that has room for a half-length PCI card, so any laptop that can dock with
those can use an additional PCI video card."

If both the display adapter and monitor show dual entries, then the notes
on this page might help.

"Guide to Dual Monitors in Windows"

Your T40 should have an ATI Radeon video card in it, which should
support multiple monitors. Some suggestions and alternative solutions
are on this web page, including one that does not involve the docking
station at all.

"Using the second VGA output of the laptop ..."

If none of the above work, I can leave the question open to see if
someone else can come up with a solution, if you desire.

You are right in that all might fail because of the setup of the machine
or the lack of driver support, etc.
