I am Economics student who wants to work in China when I graduate next
year. I have done a study abroad in China and can speak Chinese at an
intermediate level. I also plan on going back to Shanghai over next
Summer to take an intensive Chinese class since I will not graduate
until the Fall of 2006. I have excellent grades (currently a 3.9 GPA)
and I also am taking Japanese at school. The problem is I do not know
where to start to look for jobs for me. I have checked the job sites
like Monster.com but all the listings are for executives or 5-15 years
experience. I know it is tough to find a job in America when you
first graduate but the daunting idea of find one abroad is even more
complicated. I do not know where to start or how to get there.
I want to do an internship while I am in China for the summer but I
also do not know where to look. I am currently trying to contact
American companies that I know are in Shanghai but I have not had any
success so far. My interest lie in banking but I am willing to
explore other areas in business.
I know I always have the prospect of teaching English but I want
this to be a last resort. Is there any advise you can give me?
Also should I be concerned with my student loans if I find a job
abroad? I know intially I probably will not make American salary so
do you have some tips to keep my payment low enough to be able to work
there?

Thanks

sapiens1-ga,

Can you elaborate a bit on what you meant by the above? Are you
having trouble finding the right companies/people to contact? Or are
you contacting them, but receiving no replies? Or....what?

Let us know a bit more, if you can.

What I meant was that I do not know the right contacts. I have spoken
to some companies but they do not know how to help me so that is a
little frustrating when I know that their company has a branch office
in China.

Hi Sapiens1-ga,
I cannot give you an answer on all your questions (like the one on how
to pay back your loans in the US), but probably on some of the others.
Main question you have to answer is: what is your financial bottom
line? Where in China you want to work? What can you offer what
Chinese economics students cannot offer?
Getting a decent job in China (apart from becoming a language teacher)
is tough. When you think you have an answer on my questions and you
think I'm moving into the right direction, please let me know.

I figured out a way to pay off my student loans if I worked in China.
That is no problem anymore. To answer you question my range is
between 8000-12000 yuan. I have read articles that state that this
salary is obtainable in China especially in areas like Beijing and
Shanghai. But the main objective is to gain business experience in
China. As for an intership next Summer I am willing to work for
2000-4000 yuan and maybe less if the company is a large international
firm. Shanghai is my ideal place of work but I am very flexible. If
I can earn more somewhere else I will go to that place.
As for the final question academically there is no difference
between me and a Chinese economic student. There are many Chinese
students how are just as academically inclined as I am. However,
what I can offer is that I am not a Chinese student. This means I
bring a diversity of thought. Outside thought is always a necessity
of business. Which is why chief officers normally come from outside
of the company to bring a freshness to the company. I feel I can do
the same with an organization in China whether it be an international
firm or a Chinese firm.
I think you are on the right track. These are questions I will have
to have an answer to if I am to work in China.

Hi, sapiens1,

I suggest you to do a online search for finding out banks or other
types of financial institutions that has opened their Chinese branches
or be about to open ones there. For those that had not opened
Chinese branches, you'd better contact with their US headquarters
through the usual way as you applying a local position in US. For
those that had opened Chinese branches or any other types of
subsiaries, I suggest you may contact directly with such chinese
branches. Because, at least in China, those Chinese branches rarely
post recruitment info on Chinese talent websites or their Chinese
company webpages to recruit a non-Chinese employer.

Following are several useful info sites containing lists of foreign
invested financial insitutions in China:
Banks and finance companies:
published by China Bank Regulatory Commission.
Banks and finance companies listed in Chinese:
         http://www.cbrc.gov.cn/chinese/licence/search.htm
Banks with qualification for derivative transaction listed in both
Chinese and English:
         http://www.cbrc.gov.cn/english/yyzg/listdata.jsp
Securities institutions list published by China Securities Regulatory Commission:
http://www.csrc.gov.cn/cn/jsp/detail.jsp?infoid=1059749188100&type=CMS.STD&path=ROOT%3ECN%3E%CD%B3%BC%C6%D0%C5%CF%A2%3E%C3%FB%C2%BC%3E%D6%A4%C8%AF%B7%FE%CE%F1%BB%FA%B9%B9%C3%FB%C2%BC
Insurance Institutions published China Insurance Regulatory Commssion:
  Insurance companies:
      http://www.circ.gov.cn/bxjg/gnwz.htm
repo offices of foreign insurance companies:
       http://www.circ.gov.cn/bxjg/wzdb.htm

It is so pityful that most of above listed websits doesnot publish the
phone number of those foreign invested entities. You may need to
search those entities english websites by its english corparate name
listed on those lists. If those list even doesnot provide english
name of those entities specially for the bank list, if you dont know
the english name, you may search out its english name through
seaeching its Chinese company webites or doing search over BAIDU.com
(most popular Chinese search engine) by a mixed keywords of Chinese
company name and a most relevant english word (ie, Company/ bank/).
Through above mentioned lists, find out the company you prefer and
contact its US headquarters or its chinese offices. I believe, usually
when you contact its china president, he may report this to the
headquarter to give a final decision for the position.

Good Luck to you!!!
