Zone Alarm from Zone Labs [www.zonelabs.com] is generally considered the best free firewall software. [http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/aboutUs/awards.jsp?lid=home_awards] |

And another option in the list is Kerio Personal Firewall (KPF). www.kerio.com/kpf I have tried ZAP. I have yet to test/trial Outpost or AVG. What I like about the Kerio developer is that s/he has a well documented change log with frequent releases, good doc in PDF format, and the capability to turn off certain functionality that might clash with anti-virus or pop-up blockers one might already use (e.g. g**gle's own toolbar with pop-up blocker). The KPF initially installs as a fully functional FW for a free 30 day trial. If not paid for within the trial it downgrades itself to a subset of functionality that continues to operate smoothly as a free firewall. |

Kerio is going to retire the Personal Firewall, so don't go for that. Source of the news: http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html I like Outpost Firewall as mentioned by peshkoff; along with Tiny Personal Firewall. If you can tell me your use on the computer, I can probably recommend the one that suits you the most. Zone Alarm is free but it may slow down your system more so than other firewalls. At the end of the day, what matters is the way you configure the firewall. Really, that is what is comes down to... some people get so annoyed with the firewall prompts that they changed settings to let most of the traffic go unfiltered. Do you have a router or the PC is directly connected to the cable modem/dsl... If it is directly connected, you really really need a firewall. If you are gonna purchase a router , then purchase one with the built in firewall. Hardware firewalls are much faster than a software one. If i had to answer in one line, i would ask you to go for Tiny Personal Firewall http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,8051,00.asp Jibran Ilyas |

fii-ga, I would highly recommend http://www.mcafee.com/us/ . In my opinion, the best firewall system out there, a real must have for any computer wishing to be safe. It's pretty cheap and is definitely worth the money. Thanks, BloodPhoenix |

Calling these firewalls is a misnomer as all they do is emulate some firewall functions on a PC. As these firewalls are just another process running under Windows they are just as susceptible to catching viruses as any other process. There are certain viruses that specifically target the firewall and switch it off together with any AV software you might have. The best solution is to run a stand alone firewall on read only media that sits between your Windows computer and the Internet. www.linksys.com offer a combined firewall/router that would be suitable to your needs. It runs from firmware so is not susceptible to the kind of hacks that are rampant on Windows. If you want to, you can roll your own. Just get a defunct PC add two network cards and install floppyfw a firewall solution that fits on a single floppy. http://www.zelow.no/floppyfw/ http://www.linksys.com |
