When I press file open in word, excel or lotus 123, I want the file to
be listed alphabetically with details - file size, date of
modification etc to be provided. I can press the details button &
double click file name title to get this done for my current session,
however when I go back into excel, I must repeat above steps.
What's the solution? |

I'm not sure I understand the question. I have an older version
of Excel, from Office 97, but when I use the File Open dialog,
if I click on the Details button, all the details you mentioned
become visible, and the files are listed in alphamunerical order
by default.
If I then close Excel and re-open it, this view is retained when
I next select File Open. The same is true with Word. Is it that
this used to work the same way for you, and now something has
changed, or has this never worked for you?

Office 97 does seem to keep the file open setting on my home computer
running Windows 2000. However, on my work computer running Win98 it
does not. Any ideas?

Aside from dmrmv-ga's suggestion, it may be that the work
computer has some administrative settings which prevent
such changes from being retained. Then again, Windows 98
may simply not have the ability to retain these settings
in the File Open dialog. Is your friend able to log onto
the work computer as administrator?

He's running W98, so there's no admin mode. It is possible to do this
in W98 - it used to work fine, then one day, it quit working. That's
how the question came up.
