I don't mind stiffing: Let A, B and C be the scores for Amanda, Barb and Collin respectively and let S be the average score on the exam. Then, A = S - 5 B = S + 8 C = 82 Adding all 3 equations up we get A + B + C = 2S + 85 and since the average scores of the 3 were the class average we know that (A + B + C)/3 = S or A + B + C = 3S we can substitute this for the left-hand side of our first equation and get 3S = 2S + 85 Solving for S gives S = 85 P.S. Don't pay for answers like this. Go to a math forum. Here's a great one: http://mathforum.org/ |
