I am a Canadian citizen living in Hong Kong right now. Next Friday I
have booked a flight from Hong Kong to Las Vegas for a week (for
pleasure). Yesterday my colleague told me that I need a passport
valid for next 6 months in order to be able to enter the US. However
my passport will expire in Feb 2006. I heard that as a Canadian this
rule doesn't apply. Can somebody find on the web for me an official
clarification from the government of the US (not from an US
embassy/consulate elsewhere) saying that I don't need the 6 months?
It has to be very clear cut so I can show to airport personnel so they
won't prevent me from boarding the plane.

Hello simonkiana

Thank-you for your question.

Before posting this as the accepted answer I would like to ensure that
the evidence I have found is sufficient for you.

"Citizens of Canada are exempt from the visa and passport requirement
of Immigration and Nationality Act (section 212(a)(7).) To enter the
United States, a Canadian citizen must be able to establish both
identity and citizenship. Documents that may establish citizenship
are:

    * Birth certificate
    * Citizenship certificate
    * Passport."
http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/req_canada_mexico.xml

The passport requirements of which a Canadian are exempt are detailed
on this page (Section 212(a)(7):
http://uscis.gov/lpBin/lpext.dll/inserts/slb/slb-1/slb-22/slb-2090?f=templates&fn=document-frame.htm#slb-act212

"Documentary Requirements for Entry To The United States - Travel from
outside the Western Hemisphere (Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia):
Canadians must provide a valid, unexpired passport."
http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/documentary_req.xml

All of these pages suggest that you do not need 6 months left on your
passport upon entry to the USA if you are a Canadian citizen.

Please let me know if this answers your question.

Link 1 and 3 were useful. For link 2, which section should I look at?

In link 2 you need to look under the "Documentation Requirements"
section - it is about two thirds of the way down the page. The
quickest way to find it is to press Ctrl-F in your browser and search
for documentation requirements, it should be the first reference that
is brought up. This is the subsection that link 1 refers to and
unfortunately is not in plain english but can just about be
understood!

Let me know if this is sufficient for your answer.

My wife was in your shoes earlier this year, except reversed. She is a
U.S. citizen who wanted to enter Canada without a passport valid for
another 6 months. I contacted many agencies that should have the
policy, but I kept getting vague answers. Everyone referred me to
someone else. Finally we called the supervisor of the bridge where
she wanted to enter and he said there should be no problem. I was
also surprised at the difficulty in getting an official answer to what
seems like a clear cut regulation.
