Greetings seatingresearcher!
I went to the undisputed "Global Leader" of spectator seating
solutions: Hussy Seating ( http://www.husseyseating.com/ ) founded in
1835, and spoke directly with Jack P. Rogers, the Vice President of
Sales in regards to your question. He was very knowledgable and very
confident in his answer, and gave what he called a "very close"
estimate:
There are 2.5 million units of fixed seating/seats sold in the US
annually.
This number includes all fixed seating: Theatres, Cinemas, Schools and
Universities, Churches, Telscopic platforms (with or without attached
chairs), Stadiums, Convention Centers, Arenas, Auditoriums, and any
other "places of assembly" you could imagine.

discuss this with him at any time, from 8am to 5pm EST, Monday through
Friday.
If I have not answered your question as you intended, or - if you want
to be more specific and ask me to do more research associated with
this specific question, please don't hesitate to ask for
clarification.

Dear Cynthia,
First of all, thank you for your effort. Unfortunately, it is not what
I was looking for.
Mr. Rogers may well be accurate in his estimate but what I am looking
for is substantiated information based on published figures or own
research. By the way, his company is NOT the undisputed global leader
in seating.
If you can find published information and give me the source, that
will be enough. If not, research will be necessary in which case I
understand that $100 is not going to cover the cost. If there is a way
to contact you, we an further discuss. Otherwise, there is not much
else I can discuss on a public forum.
I look forward to your further news and thank you again
