Hi, I am technically illiterate, and seek research on the best means of overcoming my illiteracy, either through a book, online course, or educational institution in the UK. My illiteracy is purely technical, in the traditional sense. I lack the skills to form scriptive writing. My handwriting is restricted to capital letters. I wish to make it clear that I have tertiary level grammatical and English comprehension skillls, and can type at 80 WPM. As such, my requirement is only to seek the technical skills to be able to write cursive script (commonly referred to as 'running writing') by hand. |

Have you considered a calligraphy course at an Adult Education Centre? I realise this is not exactly what you want but it may get you started. Of course, calligraphy is not exactly 'running hand' but I don't know of any courses which teach this in my local area (Liverpool) I'll be interested to see if you get any other solutions. My son (age 14) has a similar problem. He can do joined up writing (just!) but it is a constant struggle trying to get it neater or more readable. He has mild dyspraxia (clumsy child syndrome) and has had poor pencil control ever since starting school. We are encouraging him to speed up his typing speed on the PC in the hope that when he gets to GCSE his typing speed will be greater than his handwriting speed. The printed result will certainly be more readable than his handwriting. Best Wishes PS The only other idea I've just had is to have an informal word at some of your local schools to see if there's a teacher there who could give you private tuition. |

There are several books on teaching or improving handwriting that approach day-to-day handwriting rather than ornamental calligraphy. Some which look promising on Amazon.co.uk include: Better Handwriting (Teach Yourself) (Teach Yourself, ISBN 0340859989) This practical and informative book will help you to improve your handwriting and develop a mature and individual style. ... The aim of this book is to teach people with any style of writing, helping them improve their writing and develop a mature and individual style. It is specifically written for adults and uses self-diagnosis tests to identify problems, and "before" and "after" examples to illustrate common faults. Contemporary Cursive: Daily Handwriting Practice (Evan-Moor Educational, ISBN: 155799756X) Basic Joined-up Handwriting: Bk. 1 (Learn at Home Books, ISBN 0582235960) Unfortunately the Amazon classification Books > Subjects > Reference > Language > Handwriting is clogged with "how to write a PhD" type books. |

It does not look to me as if you are 'technically illiterate' - just physically incompetent in one small area You'll find that most MDs have the most appalling hand writing - as do the majority of people who type rather than write longhand. Skills get lost through dis-use, so you are probably in exactly the same position as people who once could write perfect cursive script. Rather a long time ago, prior to written examinations, I looked into the matter and decided that the best solution was to find a writing implement that was comfortable and familiar. I'm not going to suggest a type of 'pen' because that would restrict your research. I do suggest that you find an example of handwriting that pleases you, and that you practise on lined paper - regard it as 'forgery' rather than writing exercises. Also beware of developing a juvenile script. |

Thanks very much for all the suggestions. Based on the feedback, I've decided to cancel the question, as it appears that self help is the best solution. I just need to get an example book of script writing and practice. |
