Arwon, winner of the 1978 Melbourne Cup, is still going strongly as
the oldest Melbourne Cup winner still alive.
At an amazing 32 years of age, Arwon retired in Queensland with his
owners until returning to the property of trainer George Hanlon at
Leopold near Geelong.

Arwon's trainer, George Hanlon who is now 88,was pleased to report
that Arwon, whose name is the NSW town of Nowra spelt backwards, is in
a paddock on his property at Leopold, outside Geelong, still going
strong at 32. "When you're going over to give him his feed, he'll even
trot up to you," Hanlon said.

Arwon was 5 years of age.
Makybe Diva was carrying Saddle Cloth No. 1. The last time this saddle
cloth was worn by the winner of the cup was 1954
