I was born in Germany in 1953 to a German mother, but was put up for
adoption at the age of two and adopted by an American military family
stationed in Muenchen at that time. I was raised by this American
family in California. At the age of 36 I was fortunate enough to meet
my biological mother for the first time since my adoption in Muenchen
in 1955. She came to the states in 1959 and was married to an
American (not my biological father). I want to retire in Germany
within the next 10-12 years, but would love to obtain German
citizenship. Is it possible for me to do this? What all is entailed
in the process? Who should I contact here in the states that can help
get the ball rolling,...if it's possible?

Dear Zhora,

When you were legally adopted, was your birth certificate amended? In
other words, is your mother mentioned on your birth certificate? And
if she is - is there a father mentioned? Was she married at the time?

I would like to apply for a German Passport. Is it possible based on
the circumstances indicated in the email sent earlier? If so, what
documentation is
needed. I have relatives on my biological mother's side who still
reside in Germany (Diessen a.Amersee) and with whom I remain in
contact. That is where I want to ultimately retire. What procedures
should I take? Should I just work with the German Consulate in San
Francisco? Is it possible, or am I wasting my time/spinning my
wheels? Please advise. Thanks.

Dear Heinrich,

I understood your question the first time, thank you. I am quite
familiar with the German citizenship law, as you can see from my
previous answers here (if you search my name in this context).

However, your case is rather unique, and this is why I have asked
regarding the details mentioned on your birth certificate (and your
mother's marital status), not because I'm nosy, but because they might
be essential. Naturally, I could give you general instructions what to
bring, but I wanted to give you an answer that would fit your unique
condition. Therefore, I havent posted an answer yet and am still
waiting for your clarification. Nevertheless, if you'd like me to give
you a general answer without getting into details, I'll do that - just
let me know.

Dear Politicalguru,
Yes my case is very unique, and I have very little information about
my original birth certificate and whether or not my biological
mother's name
appears on that certificate. I would have to write letters to the appropriate
officials in Germany to obtain a copy of my original birth certificate. I
became a naturalized US citizen at a very young age and only have a
copy of that certificate. It bears the name that my adopted family
gave me. After all the members of the adopted family passed away, I
petitioned the court to have my name changed back to my birth given
name and it was approved. I will have to contact my uncle (my
mother's brother and his wife) to see if they can help me obtain my
original birth certificate, as well as any documents I may need
pertaining to my natural mother (now deceased). I know for a fact
that she was not married at the time of my birth. I know nothing of
my biological father. Unfortunately I haven't much more information
to provide you at this point. If you need more info, please let me
know and I will see what I can conjure up. Thanks much for your help.
