How about Neil Diamond? He meets all your requirements.

Leonard Cohen? He had to tour recently because his manager stole his money.

Paul Simon? He toured recently (alas, I've missed him!) and I could
think of at least one film he was in (Annie Hall).

Phil Collins was quite popular in his own right in the 1980's and
before than in the group Genesis. He has acted sporadically in the
period since. He continues to tour however and remains in the public
as a singer. Is this the singer/actor you are asking about? If so I
can tell you a bit more about him.

Alas, I am in error. Phil Collins is not an American. Sorry about that.

How about Art Garfunkel? He is an American singer of enormous
international fame who appears to have tried his hand at acting in
recent years.

Hey! I think it's Gene Simmons, formerly of KISS !

"As Simmons often says, "I'm a big fan of money."
CANOE

Believe it or not, he recently toured Australia but he wasn't singing.
He was doing speaking engagements.

Rick Springfield? Was in General Hospital. Sang mostly in the 80s, maybe the 70s.
Saw him in 2004 at the Toledo Zoo.

Since when is Leonard Cohen American?

Well, Mister, Cohen is Canadian. Canada is in America. US Americans
are in general very self-centred, are they?

I'm having trouble following your train of thought.Canada is in North
America not America.Americans in general have a reputation(at least in
Canada)for introducing an inferior brand of ice hockey to the canadian
public(this could be a result of them being self centred).Does Leonard
Cohen have a reputation that reflects badly on his countrymen, whoever
they may be?

Meatloaf would also satisfy your reqs.
He "broke" in '77. He was popular for a few years into the earlier 80's.
He also dabbled in acting on TV, stage and film.

How recent is "recent?" And did he tour Australia as a solo act? The
Eagles were in Australia very early in 2005, and their singer Glenn
Frey fits your description.
