I was wondering what the duty, customs and tax costs would be to import a digital camera (Nikon coolpix 7900) from the US into Canada. The cost of the camera in the US seems to be around 325.00 USD. I could purchase the camera in Canada (aprox $480 CAD) but it seems like it might be cheaper to buy it in the states pay the duty and taxs however I am having trouble figuring out the cost of brining it into the country. |

If you stay in the USA for 7 days or more, there is no duty paid on purchases of up to $750 Canadian. Thus the camera could be brought in for free. If you stay less than 7 days, you may have to pay duty if the camera was not manufactured in the USA. The free trade exemption is only for goods made in the USA or Mexico. If the camera is made in Asia (probably) then there is a duty charged, but I do not know how much. You would have to contact the Canadian Customs office near your place to find out. |
