I am currently an art teacher who is considering a career change. I'm
curious about what other teachers have done for work when they leave
the field of education. I'm looking for ideas of jobs in which my
skills as a teacher would be transferable. Thank you.

Dear steph79-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. I hope
you will forgive the way I am going to answer your question. I admit
that it is a bit unorthodox but I really couldn?t see creating a list
of potential occupations since such a list would, in a few moments,
read like a yellow pages directory.

In truth, the possibilities for a teacher are almost endless. A former
teacher?s interest will be the only limitations since he or she is
already well educated, at least in the preparatory sense, for whatever
additional training he or she chooses to embark upon. In my
experience, with law enforcement in particular, teachers are actually
highly regarded and sought after as very employable candidates. I
realize you may not be interested in law enforcement (though you
might) but I mentioned this because even though you might not readily
consider such a career, the occupation is seeking you. In other words,
while your teaching skills might not necessarily be ?transferable?,
many employers would dearly love to embrace a former teacher who comes
to the table articulate, worldly, socially adept, professional, and is
determined to invest his or her knowledge in the task at hand.

What I managed to do was query posts and articles where people have
indicated that they gave up a teaching career to do ?something else?.
As I said, this is not a list of ?jobs? like cowboy, fireman, racecar
driver, rather these are articles where such a career change is
discussed by actual people who have made this important move in their
lives. In fact, as I apologized for in advance, this is not a list at
all, but a search strategy to aid you in finding hundreds of ideas on
your own:

GOOGLE
?left teaching to become?

GOOGLE
?leaving teaching to become?

GOOGLE
?giving up teaching to become?

GOOGLE
?gave up teaching to become?

GOOGLE
?left education to become?

This is not really a ?researcher? secret but it is a bit advanced for
some internet users. Let me demonstrate how you can find hundreds more
relative articles. You can modify this search almost infinitely to
include the unknown. The quotation marks and asterisk are key to this
type of search so don?t leave them out. For example:

The search term: ?left the teaching * to become? =

?left the teaching profession to become?
?left the teaching field to become?
?left the teaching ranks to become?

Take a look:

GOOGLE
?left the teaching * to become?

Likewise, the search term: ?* teaching to become" =

?left fulltime teaching to become?
?recently left academic teaching to become?
?quit teaching to become?

See here the results from this particular search strategy:

GOOGLE
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=%22*+teaching+to+become%22

I hope you find that my answer exceeds your expectations. If you have
any questions about my research please post a clarification request
prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating and your
final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the
near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.
